Both these stories could be made in to nothing by saying the PM and family should not be allowed to accept any gifts at all ever, and to compensate for the be given a pay rise.

In a landscape where ~85% of the press is owned and run by Tory bastards and the other ~15% is run by the Jeremy Corbyn fan club, you'd think Starmer would always want to be one step ahead. If they get the chance to break a story, they also get to set the narrative. It's pretty hard to retake control of the situation once it's out amongst the red tops.

He spent the entire last 4 years avoiding saying anything that could remotely be taken the wrong way by the press, so it's a bit weird they seem to be being much more careless now. Even if they are mostly non-stories.

Have to agree, the update to the Sue Grey non story on the BBC news front page on "why us minions should care",seems to be desperate in making people care, to the point it seems really odd.
For the sake of "impartiality" Chris Mason has to shoot himself in the foot by making people sit up and take note of what BBC staff get paid more than anything else, underlining that he himself gets paid more for reading the news.
Agree on the gifts though. The company I and most work for have a zero tolerance policy on any form of gifts, so it's bizarre that Starmer would allow it. Regardless of the mind bending corruption the tories did, when selling labour as a service to the people, accepting generous gifts just isn't a good look and an easy own goal.

We can't even accept a bottle of wine at Christmas from our Spanish supplier (who have their own vinyard) for the same reasons.

From the time I've worked in the public sector pretty much the only things you could accept from suppliers was either edible or you could write with it. No one was going to bat for a supplier because they brought some Krispy Kreme's to a meeting or you got a cheap pen.
We did occasionally get some chocolates at Christmas from some, we ate the evidence.

Anything under ÂŁ25 is fair game. I trawled the internet to find someone selling a bottle of wine I was given for less than that so I could keep it. Still had to log it though.

The PM will make millions after he leaves office, they all have (even Truss probably).
No MP should be taking gifts, let alone the PM.
At my work you can’t accept anything at all, even something like a free branded pen is debatable unless you grabbed it off a stand at a trade show or something.

Had to double check our policy (local council). Pretty certain it used to be you could accept something if it is under ÂŁ5. Not sure, but I thought you could still take gifts over ÂŁ5, but had to declare them. Now it says you should refuse everything, other than small tokens such as flowers or small box of chocolates.
I work quite a bit with external suppliers and used to very occasionally get chocolates at Christmas. That all stopped during Covid though.

I wish I had a job where I got offered regular gifts. If the cleaning company we use remember they'll occasionally send me a bottle of something for Christmas and in exchange I make sure their invoices are paid a few days early.

The FT saying Rees-Mogg up for the chop at GB News, what a shame. I guess having an ex-MP is not what they want.

I can't imagine any of them have a particularly high ROI but the point in them is to 'go viral' and he is such a wet fart, he isn't riling anyone up.

The latest Private Eye said that GB News has lost £76million in its first two years. Forty people made redundant over the summer. “Stars” still getting paid a bucketload.

Have we done the irony of a former Conservative MP taking Parliament to the European Court of Human Rights (aka “a foreign court”) European court rejects ex-Tory MP's human rights claim www.bbc.com/news/articles/c62r38gd76jo

Some idiots in the general public still think he'd be better than Starmer though, it's utterly mental.
Even if it's just a minority who think that it's still too many.

I hate clicking on Farage news stories. You know there's going to be a picture of the frog-faced cunt gurning at the cameras right at the top of the page. Nauseating.

Best gifts I got at work: couple of bottles of Vodka, a crate of sweets, a large cake (think wedding cake size), crate of beer. Then there was 'reference' stuff like a crazy amount of Milka chocolate. Some of it was straight from directors, other bits from producers or agencies. It's a shame that concept has gone away, was always nice to get something at the end of a tricky project. Now we have to hold our own wrap parties in the bar at work

What gets me about the clothes story is a stupid mistake that was easily avoided. Starmer is not hard up, his wife is still working in the NHS but it's not like they couldn't afford to dress nicely. You say "thank you for the offer but I'm going to have to refuse it." if Labour want to hire me to help with comms I'm available, I couldn't do a worse job.

God it's all so fucking stupid and so easily solved but they obviously seem unable to hire anyone who can make decisive coherent statements that deal with things and nip them in the bud.

Now is their opportunity to throw their and the previous government’s conduct into sharp relief and re enforce what a shower of shit thee Tories were. Such an easy and obvious tack to have taken, I’m actually really disappointed they’ve let themselves appear as grasping as the rest of them. Dumb.
