It's just a very cumbersome platform that requires more work to get the things you like. Despite being a dumpster fire, twitter is quite simple.

Know what probably would work? Get Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Big US Sports Star #1, etc.. to all announce at once that they're leaving Twitter and moving to ..... Also, Mastodon to rename itself and implement something so that if you just put the username it defaults to @mastodon.social and you don't have to have these ridiculously long usernames. Note: some of this may already have happened. I don't follow this kind of stuff.

Mastodon is the best model for a social media platform and it is the one that should really be encouraged. It is incredibly unfriendly to people who don't know what they are doing though (even as a fairly tech savvy person it was confusing getting started). Maybe it has improved, but it will never catch on for the mainstream unless they massively simplify it.
Bluesky basically looks and feels the same as Twitter, so people could very easily migrate over to it. Seems like the mostly likely to be successful (well, that or Threads, but Zuckerberg replacing Musk doesn't feel like much of a win)
You need someone big to encourage others to the same though. A Taylor Swift, Rihanna or Ronaldo needs to make the move before people will bother trying somewhere else. Once another service starts having an equivalent number of users than the other companies and celebs will start putting effort into migrating.

None of them will be 'successful'. I think just surviving will be an achievement. The thing twitter had going for it was *everyone* was there, celebs were tweeting out shit like everyone else. Then they weren't but the proles kept on with it.
The user base will splinter onto other platforms but there is never going to be another twitter again because we don't need one. You look at bluesky and think 'who gives a fuck?'. Its full of the same meandering idiots as twitter, high on the smell of their own farts. There are just too many layers of inertia to get anyone other than the most chronically online to move their account. Like I don't specifically want to hear from humans. I follow vinyl deal pages, news orgs and content producers. I do not give a shit what some rando had for breakfast so twitter is still, basically, fine for what I use it for. Similar to the dying days of my Facebook account, its just a notice board.

People are still addicted to sniffing those farts though, doom scrolling through their lives.

Yeah, enough to keep one of the twitter alternatives going but most people blart their lives out to insta or TikTok now. Live-blogging your day on twitter isn't really a thing anymore.
I suppose what I'm saying is that I think social media as we knew it is basically dying so getting an alternative to something that is increasingly irrelevant going is absolutely futile.

Mastodon cannot do this as it would break, it's not a centralised system so you can't make a change like this any more that you could change everyone's email address in a similar way.

I really want to be done with Twitter. It brings zero enjoyment, and is just full of memes and attention seekers. It's still great for breaking news, but I don't even think that is actually a good thing these days. Anything that I need to know I'll get through work and at least it's more likely to be accurate.
And I'm not sure it needs a replacement.

I'm just waiting for Warhammer twitter, history video game nerd twitter and Scottish Rugby twitter to go somewhere else as that's mostly what I see on Twitter. Or official band accounts.

I don’t know if any other twitter quitters have found this but after I left (2019?) I found that it wasn’t just the bigots and trolls that I didn’t miss, it was the whole thing. That constant pressure of everyone on it needing to be seen to have an opinion on every issue, every day. It honest made my days so much lighter not having to keep up with it all.
Instagram is my only social media now, following only friends and family, but every so often it’ll share a sample of Threads posts into my feed. Just reading those is enough to remind me that I don’t want/need that type of interaction anymore.
For quite a few things I’m actually turning back to the mailing list. Easily digestible information, no grandstanding, no pressure to keep up constantly.

I feel like twitter would just be hard to avoid altogether; especially when news sites (especially gaming ones) just repost tweets as about 50% of their content these days instead of doing actual reporting.

I do like that even in America on her pro-Trump grifter tour, she can't escape.

I wonder if its worth messaging these kind of accounts and asking if they can move from Twitter, or at least set up accounts on other services. If enough of their followers do so, it might prompt a few of them to leave.

I really do feel like I’m doing something wrong in life- she’s doing an, I assume, lucrative talking tour whilst pulling from a graphene thin bank of charisma. And offering nothing, nothing by way of actual insight. Did I miss a gravy boat somewhere or just not go to the right school?

If it makes you feel any better, that lettuce is going to follow her for the rest of her life.

Its like The Da Vinci Code or Coldplay. You think 'I wish I could make that much money doing something so shit' but in actuality you'd lose the will to live half way through so its actually a good thing that you don't.
Imagine being the kind of person who not only says that shit but willingly interacts with the kind of people who would eat it straight from your arsehole.

But, I dunno, it feels kind of futile. We know she's an arsehole and she's just speaking to idiots. Just very milquetoast Marina Hyde/Supertanskii level political commentary. If you really want to flash up something behind someones head, try a picture of dead children behind an Israeli War Crime Apologist.

I'll take the opportunity to retell my Liz Truss joke.
Ahem.
Since being ousted, Liz Truss can no longer enjoy sex, unless she's got a lettuce stuck up her arse.
And if you think that's bad. It's just the tip of the iceberg.
Don't worry, opportunities to tell this joke are likely to dwindle further.

As nice as it is for us to read those guys have more experience sitting in front of a judge than most barristers, and they still haven't learnt anything by this point.

She has no power and the people who value her views don't matter. Tbh I'm baffled who can be bothered giving her the time of day, but it takes all kinds I guess.

And remember if she attends as an ex-prime minister, she gets to bill us her expenses up to £100k per year. She should absolutely be a target of ridicule and not allowed to forget.
