apparently not, galloway didn't show, and a lot of those reform candidates didn't show up to any hustings, or their counts, or have any social media presence, or even a photo

I may be being dense here but don’t the candidates have to be present when the results are declared? No "he" was apparently in hospital with pneumonia (although that seems very much like bollocks). George Galloway is very much a real person, unless he's a cat, he scarpered when he was told he had lost, candidates know the result before it's announced so can leave but it's incredibly poor form. Galloway is a twat anyway so not a huge surprise he'd not want to look bad.
Other Reform candidates that may or may not be imaginary apparently were also too ill to attend their results.
It's a very bizarre story and if shown to be even slightly accurate it's a police matter not the Electoral Commission, some thinking that fielding candidates that don't exist allowed Farage and friends to spend a lot more money than they could have otherwise.
Whatever the outcome it's just yet another huge question mark over Reform.

all that said, it would be pretty easy to get 600 mad twats from their email list who'd agree to have their name attached to a constituency campaign and that'd be the rules covered, no need to show up, no need to actually campaign or do anything, just be a real person.

They get to spend 55k per candidate, so, artificially inflating the number (via Putin’s bot and ai army, or who the fuck ever) means they can chuck more money at ads on social media etc. There’s real gain to be had by fielding more people. I’d hope journalists are all over this and prosecutions follow but that sort of naivety left long ago.

As much as I want it to be true that they have been faking candidates and about to be investigated by the police, they would have to be completely idiotic to do anything like faking candidates. Chances are they just got a few hundred of their pals, donors and supporters to chuck their names into being a candidate somewhere. They only cared about actually winning a dozen or so at best, so most of them didn't actually have to do anything to campaign. They just wanted the image of having people everywhere and get as many votes all over the place, as well as being able to spend more money. |
