Today’s lesson at journalism school is how to say ‘You’re talking bollocks’ without ending up in the libel court. 😆 Penny Mordaunt says Boris Johnson's Covid WhatsApp messages went missing www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-67780595

Are they under oath or anything for this inquiry?
Because it seems pretty obvious that what they're saying happened to the messages is not something that could actually have happened to the messages, and it's pretty easy to prove for anyone with knowledge of how Whatsapp works.

They cannot be placed under oath. Contact with religious artefacts will cause them to combust and return to their own dimensions.

I'm not sure if this counts as *good news* but it's at least mildly less horrible than it was before. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/dec/21/home-office-reduces-earning-threshold-hike-for-family-visaThough surely doing the increase in stages and fixing the level for existing families is going to encourage people to rush to apply now, which is then going to have the opposite effect of their originally stated intent. My main hope is that anything this government has planned 'for the future' will never happen because they'll get booted out before then.

Bit of a random musing but one of the challenges I have had in voting for my area with local elections is a lack of good candidates.
I would like to vote Green or Lib Dem but when you look at the education, life experience and background it's difficult to see the individuals as being effective and capable of implementing change.
With the London mayoral next year I won't be voting for Khan. IMO he's failed to adress the issues with policing, crime, public transport and his approach to housing such as building thousands of unaffordable and unsuitable apartments and including shared ownership as a affordabilty criteria is a convenient tool to meet targets.
Susan Hall seems to be a bit of a right wing nutcase and the Green Party candidate is an also ran.
So I'm leaning towards Rob Blackie who looks credible and has policies (generally speaking) that I agree with.
A Lib Dem mayor is never going to happen though so it feels like a wasted vote.

Especially wasted now it's an FPTP vote again. Which is a shame because I suspect there are a hell of a lot of people who feel the same way as you about Khan, but will vote for him as the only realistic option.

I hadn't clocked that it was FPTP again in the London election. Was that a change across all Mayoral elections?

I don't know. I think it was done fairly quietly by the Tories in what can only have been a fairly blatant attempt to help whoever their candidate was going to be. But then they selected that nut job and showed they can't even be competently corrupt.

I see we are going with the Alanis Morissette definition of "ironic".

Ho ho ho, Merry Christmas, an early gift to enjoy before the main day. The whole article is paywalled but this gives a good impression of it.

Escobar was a murderous bastard but he did at least invest in services for his fellow Colombians, unlike Tories, plus his product was actually functional.

But then they selected that nut job and showed they can't even be competently corrupt. It was slipped in to the Gerrymandering Act 2022 and applies to all devolved elections except the national assemblies. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elections_Act_2022Khan has done mostly fine. I think people don't entirely get how powerless the Mayor is. Since COVID TfL has only got yearly budget approval from the minister for transport, complete with conditions like ULEZ and a shitty letter claiming Khan is incompetent. The Met is answerable to the Home Secretary so he doesn't have the same levers to pull like Burnham in Manchester or Yusef in Scotland. Housing similarly he has no budget just approval powers. And several housing secretaries have overruled him or gone over his London Plan with red ink to block anything planned. Coffre managed to get the minister to overrule building a single block of flats on a TfL car park in her constituency.

I see someone went to the Dennis Reynolds School of The Implication. For some reason I misread that as the Denise Richards School of The Implication.
And I thought Christmas only came once a year!

Very obvious point, but yep- they’re used to “saying” stuff into existence. If people around you don’t question (or feel they can question) your verbal gifts to the world then you start thinking you’re some sort of yachty based fount of knowledge, see Musk and most of the Tory government, etc.

The video Sunak has put out tonight is so awful I'm not going to link it, just imagine the most absolutely cringey shite possible as he tries to be funny "alone" at Christmas at No 10.
Then double the cringe level.

I saw it, though didn't dare turn the sound on. Staggeringly awful, especially when Starmer manages to smash it by just posting a nice photo.
