My teeth are shit largely because no NHS dentists were available throughout my teenage years. Nice to see nothing's changed twenty years later.

The way the government (and previous ones) totally dismantled NHS dentists is shocking. The way they did it never made any sense. I assume it was designed to make the entire system so broken that people would have to move to private dentistry, but the UK has never had a system of private dentistry so I assume private dental insurance still isn't a common thing to have.
For reference, there are about 10 dental clinics within a 20 minute walk from my apartment. A general checkup would cost about 4 quid. Don't need to be a member, although it might take a week or so to get a non-emergency appointment.
Though like the UK, (I assume still), prices can get expensive for non emergency care, or for white fillings that aren't on front teeth (and so aren't covered by national health insurance.
If I ever come back to the UK, I'm definitely getting my entire family full dental checkups/treatments before we come. (though I think recent immigration changes have scuppered any chance of that)

Indeed- she’s a moral vacuum but *technically* hasn’t done wrong so can she just get back to the yachts and champers please. It's the way these cunts have been working for centuries. That’s literally her defence. I bet it was word for word edited out of the interview on Sunday.

This is the reason a lot of my work colleagues will go home for various things, especially dental care. They say it is cheaper and far easier to get and appointment.

My dentist has just been taken over and luckily have added an NHS dentist, having been without one for yonks. Managed to get the kids in for their first check up in 18 months. He was glowing, "best teeth I've seen all week". Makes all the nagging worthwhile! Determined my kids aren't going to do what I did and neglect them. Way to make me feel guilty, cheers Dougs

£176 combined for my regular clean/check up appointments in Sep, but that included a deposit for the next appointment if I booked it then. Non-refundable and sits in their accounts for 6 months gathering interest for an extra kick in the nuts. Bupa dental really are a shower of money grubbing cunts.

Dentists here are like bloody hair salons. They pop up all over the place. I think 4 new ones have opened in the past year. My old apartment had a 5 minute walk to the station, and there were 9 dentists on the way I put off going for ages because I was worried about the cost, and the first time I went the bill was about 1 quid. I thought they'd made a mistake! I don't think dentists here get the big bucks, but they seem reasonably well off and there are lots of new young ones opening clinics all the time. They do try and upsell you on the fancy fillings though.

One thing I've never understood is why British dentists always have a dental nurse as well, and also there's this whole separate category of 'hygienist' - wtf is that all about? Here in Belgium you just get a dentist, that's it, and they're very good and reasonably cheap and covered by health insurance and easy to see within short notice. None of this fannying about with 'hygienists', no nurse just standing about and occasionally offering you a sip of pink water to spit out.

Yes, I don't know what the nurse adds. Seems mostly admin.

Last time I went I think the dentist did the checkup, and then the nurse did the cleaning.
Other than that, mainly reception and taking you to the cell.

My detective work leads me to believe they hire a chair like a hairdresser in a salon. Its usually The Dentists practice but the hygenist is renting office space and pays for referrals.

Well I haven't been to see a hygienist in decades and my teeth are squeaky clean and beautiful to gaze upon.

Last time I went, she asked me if I drank fizzy drinks. I very proudly said 'no, just water, milk and orange juice'. 'How much orange?'. 'Getting on for a litre, I love it'. 'That explains things'.
Then she spent half an hour with her knee on my chest, hacking at the plaque like she was trying to break ground for an oil rig.
Felt like id gone a round with mike tyson when I left.

Never seen a hygenist either. In the past, the dentist has done a quick scale and polish to keep on top of things. No more though, so suspect I may need a visit soon.

I go once a year. Funnily enough, just booked my visit in for start of Jan. It's only £45 a visit, which I can claim back on work health plan.
To me, that's more than affordable but I can understand why plenty of people find that unpalatable.

My dentist is pay around 50 quid a year for an annual check up and if there's anything else that crops up that requires investigation or some minor treatment I tend not to have to pay much if anything on top. It works okay for me and I've been seeing the same dentist for something like 20 years now.

I suspect it’s the lack of poking about with the clockwork orange toolkit, I've no fillings and never had a toothache

Plaque can be really bad where it attacks the bone that the teeth sit in, which is pretty common. Instead of just a tooth going bad and needing fillings or a replacement, all your teeth loosen and fallout - there is simply no bone there for it to sit in (or to screw a false tooth into). Once that bone has been eroded there is no way to sort it . Many times loads will suddenly become loose with no warning and by the time you feel they are loose it is already too late - full dentures next stop, friend of mine had to have all his teeth out at 43 years old due to this problem. So yeah. I go every 3 months for a check up and clean once I saw what happened to him.
Good luck one and all!

I haven't been since moving back to the UK... I used to go fairly frequently in the US. I paid for it, it wasn't that bad.
Have never had a cavity, though.

Never had a cavity!? I had an emergency NHS dentist appointment about a month ago, a crown gone wrong, so it will need root canal work, the dentist seemed to be genuinely surprised by the number of crowns I've had done over the years. Who needs dentures or fillings when you just install fake teeth. I genuinely don't know which of my teeth are real and which are fake.

My dad was a dentist. He would frequently tell horror stories of people that thought they never needed to go the dentist because there was no obvious problems and then one day they died from infections that spread to the brain.

Yeah it's really important you get seen. As I get older I may move to every 6 months.
