That looks a nice bit of kit. One thing that I've been meaning to look into that can probably be answered easily here. These espresso machines with portafilters. Can they make a regular mug of coffee as well? Like proper English mug, not just a poncy half sized cup you use holding your little finger out. The fancier bean to cup ones will but there is usually an extra step with the cheaper ones. The dedicas steam wand spurts out boiling water when its not on steam mode so you can make a decent americano on one appliance. Espresso in a mug and then top the mug up with hot water from the steam wand and, hey presto, americano.

If i don't end up like Fry in that Futurama episode where he drinks 200 coffees, it's going to have been money down the drain.

You only ever want to extract espresso sized amounts of coffee on an espresso machine, but you can top up with hot water if you want a mug of coffee. It won’t taste the same as a mug of filter coffee however

It's all shits and giggles until you're stood in the kitchen hand whisking matcha tea with your custom made bamboo set.

Sage Precision Brewer and the like, if you just want a machine for mugs of the stuff.

We have the fancy V60 porcelain filter holder and a hario kettle and all that, but mostly I just just that clever drip - makes equally delicious coffee, uses standard coffee filters, and you just fill it up and wait a few minutes (like a French press but tastier IMO).

As an update, I got the barista pro and it's fucking awesome. Just need to get up to speed with the milk frothing using the steam wand and have a play about with the settings a bit to see what happens. The default is already giving really decent brews for coffee and cafe cortado etc, so just need to up my latte art game and get better at it. The odds to be disappointed in a coffee shop have definitely increased after getting this thing. Life-changing would probably be a claim too far for how i feel about it, but it's significantly life-improving!!

Yeah, once you get the hang of it you start to compare it to how coffee shops make theirs. In fairness it’s as much preference as anything else but there have definitely been cases where I’ve gone to a cafe after having the same beans at home recently and preferring how I had it at home. I don’t drink coffee with milk though so I couldn’t match a cafe’s cappuccino or latte though. That said, the auto setting on the Sage is pretty good.

My FIL wanted a coffee so I’ve made him one with some really nice coffee, from freshly ground beans.
He then added three heaped teaspoons of sugar to it before tasting it.
No words.

Pearls before swine. Make him the instant he deserves next time. Definitely. Apparently he normally has more sugar in his drinks than that. He normally has the darkest roast possible and this was a light roast. He’s lucky he only has a couple of tea/coffee a day.

The odds to be disappointed in a coffee shop have definitely increased after getting this thing. Life-changing would probably be a claim too far for how i feel about it, but it's significantly life-improving!! I’ve had the base model, Sage Barista, for about 2 years now. It’s basically the same as the Pro but the settings are all a bit more manual. Took a good while to get it dialled in and learn how to use it but I can consistently make a good cup of coffee now. It is a bit of faff making it and cleaning it though, especially with 2 kids! And it’s a faff if you need to make 3-4 cups with friends around. I love the process of doing it though, a calm 5 minutes to myself amongst the mayhem of kids. Or as a nice break when working from home. A couple of things. I bought a separate tamper, only about £15, which lets me set the tamp ‘pressure’ so I know I’m consistent each time. Also if you’re struggling to get a slow enough pour and you’re on the lowest grind setting, there’s ANOTHER grind setting in the grinder, you can adjust the burr. I had to do this with my machine to get the grind fine enough. It’s not well documented out there you may need to do this. Two of my (rich) friends have got the Sage Oracle Touch (£2,000) which takes a lot of the learning/technique out of making a cup. And it’s pretty impressive, it makes a great cup of coffee, similar to a really top coffee shop with very little hassle, it grinds, tamps automatically, and you just put the wand in the milk and it froths it itself. A lot of money but they get great, consistent cups with minimal hassle. When I win the lottery….

Got an aeropress for Christmas and I'm loving it so far. I'm still just eyeballing it at the moment while I get through a bag of pre-ground stuff (I know, I know...), but results have been consistently great.
It's so damn easy to clean, with no grounds all over the place that you get no matter how carefully you try to spoon them out of a French press into the food waste. Seems to be no grimy, oily film on the cup afterwards as well which is nice.
Cheers for the recommendations!

I think the filters absorb the oily stuff.

My milk frothing (matron! etc) is now much better, and getting decent crema too, but my ability to latte art is shite.
Bought a little steel cocoa shaker for the ultimate poncing about in case anyone wants a cappuccino.
Before 11am obvs, I'm not a monster, so chillax Italian FG users.

I think the filters absorb the oily stuff. This. Anything using paper filters sorts out the oily film. Metallic filters don't seem to do it.

I'm not a coffee drinker but Ms Ecosse is, albeit only 1-2 a day. We've been buying beans she likes, grinding them at home and just using a wee cafetière/mocha-pot thing like this It works ok but I hate cleaning it and am of course a geek so was wondering about a) One of those small Melitta full automatic machines or b) a Nespresso machine but using own beans and the refillable metal capsules. Any advice from actual coffee wankers?

Knocks the socks off any pod machine I've tried.

I’ve got a melitta filter machine. It’s not not bean to cup but it makes a bloody good cup of coffee with minimum fuss. Change the filter, rinse the carafe and you’re away.
