I know its the rules but retaking for that type of encroachment is total bull I'd like to see a replay of the encroachment tbh, we never got one here... Not that I mind Sevilla winning this, but just to see.

I dunno. Goalies have figured it out so encroachment is rare. Pretty sure he was pushing out on purpose in desperation.

I think the angle of this makes it look worse but he did take a small hop forward before the kick. They just showed another replay from the side here, too. It is definitely encroachment, but still... I dunno, it feels like the type of rule that maybe could use a bit of looking at, but at the same time any changes would just make it worse/more convoluted, if that makes sense.

Isn't the rule that they have to have at least one foot on the line when the ball is struck? Seems pretty straightforward to me.

It is, any complaints are more of a "feelsbad" kneejerk reaction that it happened this way and over such a small difference. Or, you know, Roma fans being bitter (not here, but the stuff I saw on Facebook comments, for instance... Oof) Could the rule potentially change at some point, maybe, but I also don't know if a change could actually make it better because, as you said, it is straightforward and works.

Jesus I'm surprised he didn't just dive at the ball

I remember Dida also being practically within touching distance at OT one year.

Yeah, that kind of thing is nonsense but the Roma keeper giving half an inch because he jumped early feels harsh. The only way to save anything going to either corner is to jump before the ball is struck because its coming at you too fast and from too close to react as/after its struck.
No sour grapes about Seville winning I think this is more one of those “they’ve ruined offside and handball” complaints about how the laws have been tinkered and applied the last few years.
Plus I like the drama of the game being more free. A shootout where the kick to win is saved and the shootout continues is way more exciting than just getting a second chance and punting it in now the keeper’s been rattled.

Didn't watch, but that's always been the rule, hasn't it? That's mad by Dudek.

For me, it's unambiguity is a luxury we don't always get in football. Yeah, there are those situations where the fine margins seem unfair but at least we can apply the rules consistently every time. Similar to goal line technology or false starts in athletics.
If the PK rules where to change, I would prefer if they first did away with the attacker being allowed to stagger their run up, which is universally shit.

I like ambiguity, it adds to the human drama of it all. If we’re dealing in absolutes why not just get the AI to make all the calls.

Anyway, Mourinho has lost his first European final.
Looks like it was his... Not-So-Special One

I just think it breeds inconsistency which in turn breeds unfairness. If there were a hypothetical perfect system for determining offsides (for example) I would absolutely favour that over the current system. Would some drama be lost? Absolutely but I think a lot of that kind of drama is detrimental to the game.

Wow.
For a moment last night Chelsea-Mourinho nostalgia washed over me and I wanted Roma to do it, but this reminds me what a cnut the man is. Horrendous behaviour. Like how everyone is just standing back and watching it unfurl too.

I sure hope the "Special One" does not end up returning to Premier League one day, not as long as Taylor is an acting referee at least

Barney Ronay's article was good. Pointing out that Mourinho has always instructed his team's to appeal for cards, feign injury and hassle the ref. i.e. making the refs job as hard as possible.
So to then insult the ref for a perceived failure to do a good job is even worse.
We've long known what kind of man he is. This isn't a surprise.

That's an appalling failure by the authorities imo.
Btw, why is the conference league final later than the EL?

And it turns out actions have onsequences. The replies to that tweet are so gross too. As if physically harassing and attacking a family in public isn’t enough of a wake-up call for the dickhead brigade. The police or security or whoever those guys are are hardly earning their pay. I wonder if Jose will give his Trump post-Jan 6 non-apology soon.

Why was the Europa league final before the Conference league?!
Surely it should be in order of importance, Conference, Europa league, Champions league.
Weird.

That's what I would have thought too. It was an odd arrangement of dates for them imo. Although obviously, if my team is in the Europa conference league next season, then it will be the one with the utmost importance!
