Marilyn Manson and Louis CK are both nominated for Grammys this year?! Wow. Nailing your colours to the 'sexual assault is OK' mast is quite the thing to do.

I cut a lot of slack for people over the age of 60 coming out with dated things. What do you expect of them? Look at your own parents or grandparents and think about the amount of dubious opinions they almost certainly have.
It's a generational thing more than anything. It's hard to keep up. Things change incredibly quickly, really. Skinny jeans aren't even fashionable anymore!

Having awards for different genders is pretty strange anyway. Sales and critical responses to releases doesn’t appear to have any gender or race bias, it just comes down to who is on that voting panel. If it was nothing but a bunch of 70 year old Richard white been you’re going to get a very different result to 20-30 year olds deciding.
That said awards for art things is stupid.

Err.. so he's arguing that treating everyone equally, regardless of race, sex, etc... is bad because it prevents people treating everyone equally, regardless of race, sex, etc... Does not compute. He should be supporting this wholeheartedly, based on his own arguments. Unless you assume that this deep seated 'fear' that he's attributing to everyone is coloring his thinking... though exactly why he's so scared of non straight white guys is a big question. Reminds me of the interview where Morgan Freeman said that the way to end racism is to stop talking about it. I wonder if he still holds that thought.

And he's ginger
I say this. In my experience, women love a ginger these days. It's not the disadvantage it should used to be
We once banned two gingers at work from dating, so that they couldn't breed.

My dad comes out with all that 'It was acceptable in my day, Im offended youre offended because Im just a product of my time' stuff but the wifes dad is five or six years older than mine which, by his logic, should mean he is even MORE racist and intolerant but he isnt. He is a lovely, tolerant, inclusive old guy who I have never heard even slip out something xenophobic. An admittedly narrow sample but accepting bad behaviour because people were just shitheads back then is doing a disservice to a lot of people who werent.

Yeah, that too, absolutely. My dad still uses the fact that I called *everyone* gay or a gaylord when I was younger as a gotcha that I'm not so perfect myself.
Well, quite. But I dont do it anymore and Im not proud I did. And Im certainly not pissed off that society wont let me do that anymore without pushback.

You can still call some people gaylord, like William Lygon, 7th Earl of Beauchamp, he was a very gay Lord

No no, maybe I've not explained that well enough. I mean, even the most well meaning person can get left behind I imagine. I'm not excusing nasty behaviour as a purely generational thing. More that it's part and parcel of getting older to end up more and more out of touch or disconnected from popular culture. So I have some sympathy for old codgers like John Cleese that used to be young and with it and on the cusp of new and exciting things, who are now just a bit fuddy duddy and dated and say embarrassing things on social media. It just illustrates the pace of change within society.

Growing up in 2 areas highly racist definitely left me with some questionable views, albeit latent, when I left for uni. But as soon as out there in a multi-cultural world, I realised what a twat I was for even thinking such things even fleetingly. Kids eh?

With some people it seems like their brains just kind of go off at some point though. I know people who have been reasonable normal people, happy to live and let live even in less woke times, who suddenly just started spouting racist nonsense and conspiracy theories as they passed 60. I don't know if it's the famous Facebook radicalisation or if they just went wrong in the head at some point, but I find it genuinely scary.

From the original Politico article. What kind of egomaniac expects anything from a bunch of kids?

"I’m better than every instrumentalist, artist, no matter what art you do in this school, right now, I’m better than all of you. I’m sure that will change. I’m sure you’ll be household names soon."
What a C U N T. Just fuck off, Dave.

His retort in that article is total terf logic, so he was at least honest when he was team terfing. He absolutely cannot accept anyone getting rights while there are other people with rights outstanding. Apparently there is a finite amount of rights to go around.

I do think there's a need for sex segregation in awards ceremonies like that tbh. Look at the Oscars - best director has been won by TWO women. Once in 2010 and once in 2021.
That's an average of one a decade. Or 10% of the time, if we just count the 21st century.
At least segregation allows women to be seen as winners and inspire others, when so much of the issue is the ability to actually get into and be successful in the arts.

Historically female directors haven't had anything like the kind of parity that musicians have had, so the comparison is a bit of a stretch.
My main concern with the decision is that you essentially halve the amount of awards handed out.

I think to the section of angry boomers who read the Express, it means "anything we don't like".

I'm quite happy to see the term used arbitrarily like that, it means it'll lose what tiny quantum of meaning it has.

Wonder when "boomers" will become the next "faggot" from 20-25 years ago. Ageism seems like the last taboo before the cycle restarts again. Generations are spoken about like fashion trends now rather than actual generational gaps so probably not before long.

The majority of that article is actually a fairly level headed description of what happened and why. It's like they wrote that article and then the editor went "let's sweeten it up, it needs a hooky headline!" and the writer screamed into a pillow afterwards
