Yeah don't get me wrong, I think what they did was stupid and provoked a predictable response - I just don't like the idea of this poor repressed billionaire claiming it was a doxxing when anyone with Google can find the same information.

Did anyone see the stuff about JK Rowling getting "doxxed" yesterday? Three trans rights activists held placards and took a photo outside her house "with the address visible" and she took to Twitter to complain about being targeted/harassed. My initial view was "ok, regardless what you think of their views, you can't doxx someone, it's just playing into their hands at best" But it turns out the photo they took didn't have a house number and street name or whatever, it was just a sign saying "(Housename) House", and the reason that doxxes her is she lives in a huge fuckoff mansion that you can find just by the name - because of course she does. Also the same mansion is mentioned in many local guides as her house, and has obviously been photographed and posted on social media by hundreds of Potter fans over the years. So my sympathy, which wasn't huge to begin with, has basically dried up completely. If I had as much money as her and a bunch of massive nerds obsessed with me I'd live in a huge fuckoff mansion (with big walls around it). She's still a terf though. |

Yeah, when your abode has its own Wikipedia page (which includes several references to your ownership of the property, grid coordinates, your postcode, and a map with a pin), it's a bit hard to claim you've been "doxxed."
That said, I don't agree with what they did, and totally agree that it was stupid.

I don't agree with it, either. I dunno about doxxing but going to the home of someone you have existential beef with and posting it on social media is dangerously close to harassment.
That said... Rowling seems desperate to keep herself in the public eye. Increasingly so as we move further away from her having written anything successful. So it's difficult to see her supposed outrage as anything but another move in that game.
