Punching down is always a bad look. Especially when there are so many people who deserve to be punched up at.

Genuinely haven't got Chapelle's appeal the whole time. He's treated like some soothsayer in some circles, it seems to have gone to his head.

The article over at the old place about the lack of diversity in the top 100 earning twitch streamers seems like a load of bollocks. Point fingers like Twitch need to do something about it, but ignore that these are quite simply paid that much based on viewer figures. Surely that's entirely on whoever is watching them.
Might as well blame YouTube for Baby Shark not being inclusive enough while we're at it...

I can see it from both sides as in there may be an element of certain people getting promoted on the front page. But then on the other hand the free market will always decide.

I have read the article, seems to be making very large leaps in thinking.

It's like a new angle on the age-old "diversity hire" debate. Sure, Twitch aren't responsible for the lack of minorities in their top viewing figures. But they could do more to encourage minorities to "apply" (/become streamers) to address the imbalance.
Edit- and yes, platform specific stuff like promoting streamers to the front page or doing some marketing on their behalf could also help.

In Dave Chappelle's latest and last Netflix special he rants pretty hard about trans women, to the point of defending JK Rowling and proclaiming he's a TERF. I generally like Chappelle, he can be hilarious and wise but I'm not sorry this is the last special as they've lately been bad. Seems like he's all about bitter material about trans women then questions why he's getting hate. I hate this trend of comedians going "Oh can't joke about anything these days!" as part of their routine. Get new material. I’ve not watched the Chappelle thing yet but on the label TERF. I kind of feel like its lost a fair amount of its original meaning somewhere along the line. Like every gets that its Trans Exclusionary, but the Radical Feminist half seems to get forgotten.

I used to like Chappelle, but it seems like every year that passes he becomes more and more of a reactionary arsehole.
I imagine this stuff will be looked back on as fondly as Eddie Murphy and his 'they got that AIDS all up on their lips' material.

I'm disappointed to read that as I find his stand-up to be brilliant, really clever stuff. I really don't understand why people are bothered/feel threatened or whatever by trans people, they're just living their (difficult) lives, fuck off and worry about something worthwhile (imminent planetal destruction, obscene wealth inequality etc.).

Anyway, Chappelle should probably shut the fuck up, because nothing he says on this topic is helpful in any way. But it's a bit of a vicious circle, in that people are angry because he keeps going on about the trans stuff, but he probably keeps going on about it because people get angry at him.

Keeping up with the zeitgeist gets harder and harder the older you get, and it’s particularly hard for comedians who tend to operate around the tipping point of what is and isn’t acceptable.
The thing to do would probably just admit it’s hard to stay in touch and apologise when damage is inevitably done, and try and do better. But so many comedians take the option of doubling down and leaning into whatever area of bigotry they’ve stumbled into and making it their thing.

The thing about Chapelle is that he is great, maybe one of the greatest but he would be the first to admit he isn’t some kind of prophet and that all comedians have duff material.
It also seems that, yes, it’s not just middle-aged, white comedians who don’t like to be told ‘no’.

They basically have exactly the same demographic as my team at work. Senior and junior staff looking like before and after pictures and struggling to recruit because we have already cleared out the white, bearded nerd store.

It's fitting that one of the first articles of the white, bearded man that replaced Emma is to comment on a lack of diversity...

I think one of the things that gets me about Chapelle and others who “go there” over trans issues is that trans people are such tiny minority that he’s (probably) had to go out of his way to get all het up about them.
Like why of all the places to go choose that to be where you go?

And its not like its a total no go area either. I love the work of Andrew O’Neill and a few years ago they had a Radio 4 show about their transvestitism which had some very funny jokes in it and much more recently they chose to drop he for they/she and have done some fun stuff on that too.
There is definitely a rich vein of material to mine and its disappoint that manly male comedian men aren’t using their time to make jokes about their/societies attitude but at the expense of a minority who get enough shit already.
