Jesus, maybe the guy is a dick or the other way around, but having gotten a bit disoriented while hiking in the fells here myself (don't hike alone in mountain fog in the Arctic) it's fucking scary. I had proper gear, tent, extra food, a good map and a well-planned route, so I wasn't going to die, but once you start losing your bearings and get tired it's so easy to start making dumb decisions and take risks. We've had a lot of trouble lately with tourists being completely clueless, doing stupid stuff like try to hike up our tallest mountain in flip-flops and shorts with no provisions. Or wander into our national park Sarek where there aren't even any real trails..It's a gorgeous place that I'd love to visit, but even being reasonably fit and experienced I wouldn't try to cross it alone. They've started charging people for "dumb" rescues now though. |
