Growing old sucks!
I used to sleep through the night when I was younger... Actually when I was younger I was probably returning from a nightclub about now rather than staring up at the ceiling after a 'night' of tossing and turning.

I've been a shitty sleeper my whole life. Regularly still awake 2 or 3 hours after getting into bed. Sometimes wake up randomly at 3am for an hour or two. It sucks. Less caffeine and booze during the day/evening helps, as does eating a snack before bed time. Wife is the complete opposite, she's in a deep sleep 2 minutes after her head hits the pillow. That said, it's currently 2pm here in Australia.

I was thinking about this thread as I lay in bed awake last night, finally drifted off about 3:30

I was awake 4-5 in the end and broken sleep before and after. I need to get back into meditating and also exercise. I already canned alcohol and caffeine some years ago. You'd think my body works be grateful enough at that and would let me sleep.

Yeah I gave up caffeine a year or so ago and I seemed to sleep better for a month or two but then back to normal. Now I find it's usually either cos I'm hungry (easy to solve) or that my brain just won't switch off (reading a book helps with that).

Was fine last night but have been waking at 4am quite a lot recently. Podcasts and wireless earbuds have been a godsend. Trick is finding one that isn't too engaging to drift off to. Football ones generally work for me. Comedy less so.

I cured myself of waking up too early by staying up too late instead - now I get a nice solid 6 hours of sleep from around midnight til 6am most nights

I woke up at 5:30 this morning so can confirm that hebden's idea although it works in theory has led me to be sat here like a comatose zombie. I've got a flamin annual appraisal for someone later that I need to be awake for. I'll never manage!

Hello darkness my old friend...
On the plus side, it appears I've got a spider on one of our security cameras to keep me company.
Woke up due to too much on my mind which is apparently the reason my neck has been killing me for the last three weeks. Looks like the stress from work has given me fibrositis which is bloody painful. I'm having to use a collar when it gets really bad at the end of the day. I need to look into destressing myself.

I should go to bed but the wife will kill me if I wake her up. Fancy snacks now too.
Good luck getting back/to sleep those who struggle

Have you tried meditation apps like headspace? I know it sounds like a cliché but they really help me unwind, even the free free version. It basically helps you clear your mind. I'm only up because I'm on feeding duties for the little one. He's done feeding and now I'm holding him till he settles into a deep sleep.

Not quite 4am but here I am up with the little one. She’s nearly 2 now but a still a terrible sleeper. Doesn’t usually sleep for longer than 2 hours. At the moment she’s also really constipated so that’s making things worse

Hope she feels better soon.
I thought my son was in deep sleep about 19 mins ago l, went to put him into his cot and as soon as his feet hit the mattress he woke up....so here I am again.
He looks like he's fast asleep again but now I'm scared...I'm going to be up till 8 🙈

Thanks. 4:30 is early even by her standards Trying to get her back off so I could try to get an hour in before the other two wake up. Not holding out much hope though.

5.15am wake up here. Usual podcast trick didn't work, so got up instead of keeping my wife awake. Only quiet time in the house mind you, so not all bad!

It's not a cliche at all and your quite right, I should be doing them. I've got Calms and Smiling Mind and I've used them a lot in the past and they help. Sadly I'm at the "too busy to meditate" stage and I need to get out of it as I know just how beneficial meditation is to me and my life in general. Consider my ass kicked, I'll get back to bookending my day with meditation as I need to deal with this work stress.

Wahey! The rain woke me up because my flat is shit and my landlord is worse because he doesn't fix anything. Enough rain and I get a drip on the bedroom windowsill that sounds like a snare drum

I wish it was raining here. Like, apocalyptic cold and rainy.
Not because I hate sunshine or anything, but because the nice weather draws more people outside in massive groups, and that could increase transmission which will extend the lockdown more.

Working night shift means I am regularly up during the night. Just finished a couple of home made burgers, and watched Cunk on Britain.

I woke at about 4, but tried mindfulness and managed after a while to drift back off to sleep. I've meditated this morning too.
By the way, if you fail to sleep at all, meditating the whole night will have the same effect on your brain as if you'd been sleeping. It will do the same housekeeping tasks it does normally.
