As I feel partly responsible for this thread being created (unless it was a MYSTERIOUS COINCIDENCE), I'd like to share an entirely true scary story.
About 30 years ago, my mum worked for my grandad's business, doing all accounts and admin and stuff. She bought an electric typewriter to do her work on. One night, when I was sat upstairs playing happily on my Amiga, I heard a scream from downstairs. What had happened was this:
My mum had turned on the typewriter, and it started going haywire, so she immediately turned it off again. But when she looked to see what had happened, it had written:
Hello!
I'd like to show you my
... which was the point where she'd turned it off.
Needless to say this freaked her right out and she had to get rid of the typewriter.
Was it haunted? Was it broken? Was it some kind of in-store demo mode that she'd accidentally activated? You be the judge.

It's not remotely spooky or scary to anyone else, but I have some kind of a connection with the previous 4 owners of our house stretching back 40ish years. My sister is good friends with the woman we bought it off, who had bought it from my Mum's old friend and work collegue, who had bought it from my sister's (same sister) current next door neighbours, who had bought it from my sister's (again, same sister) school friend's parents. My sister used to come here as a kid to play with her school friend 35+ years ago, and just over 27 years ago I had an asthma attack in the front room (my Mum brought me with her to visit her friend) and ended up in hospital for a week. That was a distant childhood memory and none of this dawned on me when the house came on the market or even during our first viewing, it was in our second viewing that I had a proper "what a fucking minute..." moment, and sent a message to my Mum asking her if this was the house. The other 3 connections then promptly came to light when I showed my sister the house we had just bought.
It really spooks me out when I think about it. Particularly the asthma attack bit, I came close to leaving this world that day, and here I am 27 years later.

I have 2.
My brother found a dead cat in the wall of his house when renovating, apparently they used to put dead cats in walls to ward off ghosts and evil spirits.
After it was gone, his girlfriend started going on about seeing or hearing weird things at night. They'd lived there for years, but it started shortly after it was removed. He never did, she was quite superstitious, but they got rid of the house in the end.
The other one was when my father was a carpenter working at a grand house in country. It was just him and another guy, but the house had a bit of a rep for being 'haunted'.
Again, he wasn't at all superstitious (none of us are in our family), so shrugged it off, but he was working in there one day, and his mate had to go and get some supplies.
While he was working downstairs, he heard someone walking across the room in the floor above. Thinking it was the guy who'd returned, he called out to say he was downstairs, and the footsteps immediately stopped, turned and started walking back towards the stairwell. He went to the bottom of the stairs to meet him, but there was no one there.
He investigated, looked around all the rooms, but nothing there. Like I said, he wasn't scared or prone to overreacting, but once he opened the door to the last room and confirmed the house was empty, he calmly went back downstairs, packed up his tools and left the house and sat on the wall outside. The guy returned an hour later.
It took a lot to spook my dad, I think that's the thing I most remember about him telling me.
