Truth be told, I've never really bought into the notion that Italy are improving - at least, not to the point whereby they deserve their spot in the Six Nations in place of various 'tier 2' nations - so I'm not all that surprised by their poor RWC showing.

Underage teams have been pretty good. If they can get a decent coach that stays a while they might build some momentum again.

Not strictly related to the discussion at hand, but does anyone else remember Mauro Bergamasco's cameo at scrum-half back in the day? Man, that was rough (although I kind of like the fact that 'Bergamasco playing 9' is now rugby shorthand for screwing the pooch in spectacular fashion).
