I feel a bit sorry for Cian Healy missing out with a late injury, he'd worked hard on being useful in a number of positions and would have been handy at times. Pretty happy with McCloskey and Earls getting the nod, the balance in the squad seems pretty good which is helped by a lot of flexibility in the positions the the players can play in. The SA-NZ knocked the confidence (aded to the growing fear about Scotland) so the group situation feels like it's balanced on a few knife-edge moments.
Nearly there!

France thumped Australia earlier, 41-17. Jones still waiting for his first win

England and Australia are shambolic, New Zealand are misfiring. Scotland, Ireland and France looking great.
Should be an entertaining World Cup with South Africa probably winning in the end.

On this timeline, Eng and Aus will be in the final. Bortho and Jones will heralded as geniuses of the modern game.

I wish the Guardian would write something about Scotland. They managed a whole article on Pool B being a showdown between The Books and Ireland with one sentence on Scotland.
The Scotland match reviews are often by the Press Association and quite often squad announcements they just attach the team list at the end of an article about Wales.
It's like they want to prove the SNP are right

Particularly egregious this year, as Scotland are going into the World Cup in a far better state than half the Six Nations countries (England, Wales, Italy) and on par with France.

You could've dropped "entirely accurate" from that sentence, Bobby - patronising and unnecessary!

You could've dropped "entirely accurate" from that sentence, Bobby - patronising and unnecessary! Yeah and they've done full articles on New Zealand, The Boks, Australia, Wales even Argentina. God knows how many think pieces on Borthwick. The Scotland France game was written by "Agencies" FFS.

England's team to face Argentina on Saturday: www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/66731907Highlights: Mitchell to start at 9, even though he was only called up when JVP got injured; Curry is back; Lawes is captain.

Shows how clueless Borthwick is when two players who weren’t even in the squad before injury call ups are now in the starting XV

He's looked at the opening 10 minutes of the Fiji game and the weather forecast, and decided that'll do.

elstoofExactly! Both May and Mitchell were deemed surplus to requirements a few short weeks ago; now they're regarded as starting material for the toughest of England's pool games. At this stage, I'd be willing to accept it if one of the tabloids published an "inside scoop" declaring that Borthwick's picking his teams with a Ouija board - it makes as much sense as any other explanation.

I'm bricking it for Sunday, I guess after the South Africa game the die is 50% cast in terms of getting out of the pool stage and I can adjust my hopes accordingly.

A friendly reminder to anyone else who's doing the fantasy rugby thing: you need to finalise your team before the tournament starts this evening!

Hopes for round one:
- France to beat the All Blacks; - Scotland to beat South Africa (or at least nab a bonus point, and preferably two); - Georgia to beat Australia (no disrespect to the Wallabies - I just hate Eddie Jones); - Fiji to beat Wales (sorry, Trowel! I was quite taken with Fiji when they beat England, is all); - England to [ I don't even know anymore ] against Argentina.
