Cool. Have a chat with stockpile Thomas if you haven't already. Also, there's a raggedy set of armour in the first level that's much lighter. However you need to be a female character to wear it. He's bursting at the seams with rubbish shields, but I've stored stuff for later. Gonna run through the Gates again in this garb Is that a female character or a male? My eyesight is shot to fuck on a phone.

Excellent. Means you can wear the raggedy armour while you level up. It's not actually that bad a set tbh

Fuck, I've had even more beer and smokes now and I *really* want to fire this up to see where I am.
I can see how this is going to go...

Doesn't that mean you could also help a hapless Soul (like me) out sometimes? I got into a bit of a silly rhythm last night with this. I was having little explore of the other part 1 areas and I'd progress a little way into an area, collecting about 1000 souls on the way, then get overconfident and die in a daft way (usually running into a group of enemies I should have known would be or I'd forgotten were there). I'd run back through, collect my previous souls, then die again shortly after. Again and again and again. If I'd just collected the souls a couple of times and then headed back, I probably could have levelled 5 times. Idiot. So I stopped. It was fun to play but I'm guessing it's possible to end up in a near infinite cycle of "just a few more souls!"

I don't use miracles but the first thing I do (which I learned from the OG Demon's Souls) is grind 20,000 souls and buy Evacuate at the Nexus. Worth doing early on if you're not going to invest in faith while level costs are low, assuming you didn't pick a class that already had the requirements. Almost a requirement when grinding.

rockavitch I'll look into that (I don't use miracles either, though, yet). Tbh, it was mostly me getting into a daft loop, rather than a game mechanic thing.

If you find yourself dying at more or less the same point, there is usually a small grind route near a bonfire or even up to the place you keep dying that you can use to pump a few levels.
Early on, one of the easiest grind spots is after you kill the tower knight and have access to bonfire 1-3. If you turn around, you can backstab two blue eye knights and some trash mobs for a few K and some heals per run. Its a good way to stock up on exp and healing materials if youre running short.

I only really use it as a way to grab my souls and escape if I end up in a place I shouldn't be yet, also handy for sprinting to an item and not having to backtrack.
There shouldn't be anywhere in the game you can get stuck "intentionally" but I got knocked over a ledge and out of bounds in 1-4 and the only way out was to teleport (as there was no one within reach to kill me), without that spell I'd have had to use the nexal binding I think it's called and forfeit my 40,000+ souls so it's handy to have just incase.

I'd probably have to create another character but it shouldn't take too long. Hah yeah, you'll get into that loop while you're learning. You'll soon understand that you can take *those two* on, but when you start seeing 3 or 4 strategically placed monsters, you'll automatically think, *hang on a minute* and maybe backtrack once you've glanced at how many souls you're carrying. The next method up is to forget about losing souls. The trepidation of losing them makes you play worse. And the more you amass, the worse the loss will be. But eventually you'll just say, ah fuck it and go for it anyway. That's why when you do lose your souls for good, the next run is normally a good one because you have no souls to lose.

I highly recommend the Evacuate miracle too. It is an absolute lifesaver and essential for grinding later on in certain places

Ive never been able to cope with losing souls. If I die on the way to retreive them, I have to then grind out the same amount before I can do anything else.
I think it was The Surge 2 that gave you buffs and an achievement if you carried something like 100k around and that was like torture.

Another quick tip. Now you have access to 2-1 (world 2, level 1), there are some miners that carry on sack. These will not respawn when you've killed them and they drop loads of upgrade materials. They're worth going for. You need a piercing weapon for them really, like a spear. Or a crescent faction from 4-1 makes short work of them too. Though that faction can be a bugger to get at the start

I worked out pretty quickly that most of them you can sneak up behind (or just walk up behind, tbh) and stab with a dagger for an instant kill, which is nice. I met one of the sack guys and he did drop something, although I can't remember what it is right now. I died to the 2nd fire wielding giggle-guy immediately afterwards.

I keep dying at the 3rd bridge where you've got to sprint behind the dragon's fire but at the end, there's four untouched archers and a blue-eye guy. Arriving there with no stamina after the sprint is not the one, apparently. I suspect I'm missing something, but I'll work it out. Tbh, the bridges were where I kept on dying last night as I tried to re-gather my lost souls.

Yeah backstabbing is good as long as you don't get surrounded. And yes, Fat Officials are wankers

If so, did you also see him at the start of 1-2, slightly on the left down a passageway after the phalanx boss? And have you tried going underneath the bridges once you've reached the first one?

quadfather - the guy who you rescue in the sort of stables area? No. He gave me a telescope thing, but if I tried to talk to him again, it just said "I have other things to do" and wandered aimlessly around. Have I messed up?

It means you've done it and he'll move on now he's saying that. Ok, start 1-2, go into the room with the mini phlanaxes, take them out and bear left instead of the main route outside to the dragon. Exhaust that dialogue then leggit to first bridge and then go down and go back on yourself. Be *very* careful if you hear dogs barking. *very* careful.

You can kill that dragon by the way. You need about 150-200 arrows and you have to position yourself in the right place at the top of the first bridge tower but it's doable. Makes the entire run peaceful. Ish.

This is a big one for me as well. The biggest benefit from finding out about the bird farm in Elden Ring wasn't even the ease of grinding (it cut out a lot of time and danger, mind, but still), it was the ease of mind knowing that if I fuck up, I have a spot to refuel if needed. It let me take a lot more risks with less trepidation, let me deposit the big rune rewards from bosses more easily (even if I had nothing to buy I could bag a bird or two and reach a levelup) and so on. Ultimately, I think it actually made me a better player because I was more willing to stretch my limits and see how far my resources could take me, usually further than I thought.

Killing that dragon gives you a nice bump to pure white world tendancy too and a good haul of souls as you can use his soul too as it doesn't go towards weapons or anything else. Also makes a few items easier to grab in 1-1, really there's no reason not to kill it.
