Unreal Played for a couple hours and dropped. Levels are too labyrinthine and super dark (guess they really want me to use those flares to show off their hardware lighting), enemies move around like crazy, movement feels slippery, weapons aren't satisfying, and buttons are the same color as the walls. That last part is especially annoying. Guess I'm just not an Unreal guy. Quake 2 all the way for me. Shame, I think Unreal has held up really well over the years. The first three weapons you get are underwhelming, yes, but everything from the flak cannon onward is super fun to use. Decapitations with the razorjack are the best. Enemies moving and dodging a lot is what made me like it more than other games of that era. Quake 2 was great, but enemy AI was basically limited to standing there and shooting at you or running up to you and hitting you. The input reading dodges are somewhat annoying but overall they're just so much more engaging to fight. The world is by far the best feature though, with an amazing mix of nature, native architecture, and various alien structures. You could check out the Unreal Tourism mod which removes all the enemies from the game, or the youtube playlist of the same.

Never had a PC powerful enough for unreal back in the day, not worth going back and seeing what the big deal was or was it just all kinds of pretty?

I think I've given up on Borderlands TPS
I just don't have fun playing it. Find it quite irritating actually. It occured to me that with the low grav physics and limited air supply, the whole game is an underwater section

Never had a PC powerful enough for unreal back in the day, not worth going back and seeing what the big deal was or was it just all kinds of pretty? It's mostly the graphics which were really impressive, and the multiplayer was great. It was a fairly decent game in single player for its time, but like many others gameplay-wise I preferred Q2 to Unreal (and Q1 to Q2). Then Half-Life came out and that discussion was over. In my opinion there's not much reason to play it today.

Yeah, it's kinda the same case with Unreal 2. Looked absolutely amazing but God damn if the gameplay wasn't turgid and stale back then too. Plus a really weird story that ends very abruptly, jarringly so.

God, Unreal 2 was a massive disappointment after Unreal even to 14 year old me. One thing that makes the Unreal Tourism playlist a good watch is that it shows that the people involved in Unreal had fun making it. There's nothing like that evident in Unreal 2.

I think it was made by Digital Extremes no? Man it really felt like a game of it's time, space marine lead character with barely any character, smart but sexy woman in revealing outfit that seems to defy gravity with its ability to lift her boobs with no visible means of support, gruff older teammate and a main assault rifle that looks punchy as hell but has all the sound effect and impact of a wet fart. I paid full price for that shit in uni, I was not happy.
EDIT: it was made by Legend Entertainment apparently. I remember their Wheel of Time games which weren't great.

I can easily see that as they seem very different. Unreal 2 seems much slower, but just as clunky. Just in a different way. But I didn't play the first one for long, so it's difficult to compare.
Overall a fairly mediocre FPS. It had a few fun guns, but most of the environments were quite bland and story and frankly most of the rest was just forgettable.

I can recall Unreal so vividly even after all this time but I can only recall bits of Unreal 2. Am I right in saying it was a more bog standard mission based FPS? It seemed to be missing pretty much every element that made Unreal great. The first one was a game where you really felt as though you were exploring this huge alien world. The sense of scale was like nothing else at the time. Huge castles, massive industrial installations, crashed ships... It was epic. The soundtrack as well.
The second one was... Well. I can't remember.

It occured to me that with the low grav physics and limited air supply, the whole game is an underwater section You could play as ClapTrap...no need for air. I did play and complete, it is the weakest BL though, I have only played around 10 hours of BL3 mind you

Such a shame.

There are just so many bad design choices. Even the jump pads (which I don't like) have variants that you have to shoot first or they won't send you far enough. Why? It's just another annoying thing that's not adding anything. Everything just feels so slow and tedious, full of little annoyances
I do actually like the classes as I played around with them a bit (probably because it was more fun than actually playing through the campaign) so it's a shame

You guys have just reminded me that Unreal 2 was an actual thing... Did it have a janky mechanic involving sentry guns?
Googled it and I can remember owning it based on the cover, but couldn't tell you a thing about it apart from the above.

Funny how Quake 2 and Unreal were the subjects of many flame wars, and yet both eventually received forgettable sequels from unrelated developers. Sometimes life is just like that.

Sentry guns… that rings a bell but couldn’t tell you why. It had a really shitty sentry gun section. One of the many things I didn't enjoy about, my memory says it was an instafail level.

Well, especially after the release of Half-Life, the reason why people still played those two games was multiplayer. So I guess it makes sense that both studios switched to arena shooters for their follow-up titles and didn't care much about making single player sequels.

Yeah, there was one level were you defend some building with fellow Marines and some guns I think. It was ok, not difficult nor particularly well done. It just worked.

High on Life
Been sitting on it for about a month, but its pretty rubbish. Now that Roiland is in even more trouble, it kinda taints the idea of going back to it. My first abandoned game of the year.

I had a wee watch of a Youtube playthrough of Unreal 2 last night for a few mins, just skipping about to see if I remembered anything.
Bloody hell. I know for a fact I played it and completed it but apart from bits of the first level, I recognised absolutely nothing. What a fucking bland game.
Yet with Unreal I can still vividly recall so much of it.
Why don't we have an Unreal reboot. That would be the tits.

Pfff. I'm pretty sure they can just pull the pin on it and do this instead. I'll email them.

You know what needs a reboot? Vehiclular combat games. I had a look recently and there's nothing. There should be modern Interstate, Quarantine or Carmageddon games

Carmageddon got a reboot but that was a bit, erm, rubbish. We need something like a game of Death Race 2000. Massive transamerican race but you can load up your car with weapons and shit.
Fuck it. I'm off to make it. I'll give you a shout in a few years. Game development can't be that hard.

Oh yeah, I did notice Carmageddon Max Damage as it's in the current Xbox sale but they seem to have just made the same game again. They'd definitely all need a bit of updating. As much as I'm enjoying Forza, it does nothing to sate my bloodlust. If I can kill people while driving, I think I'd be happy

You can if you play GTA instead.
I actually still love the original censored version of Carmageddon where it was zombies you killed. Seemed to suit the game better. Loved that intro as well with Fear Factory in the background. The new one isn't even close.
