I love the idea, but I found it very frustrating to play. The end.

Observation I love the idea, but I found it very frustrating to play. The end. From what I remember, I didn't have any issues with the gameplay, but it's up there with 'most disappointing ending to a game' for me. Really soured the whole experience, so you're not missing out on much by not finishing it.

Tomb Raider Underworld.
I loved Anniversary and Legend in the last few weeks after I bought the trilogy to play on the series x. Those I enjoyed throughout, thought they held up well and were a good challenge.
This one... not so much. It starts with gratuitous sexy swimwear, then goes to a poorly signposted swimming section. Then when starts proper feels overly twitchy, too much combat and just not fun. I am not sure why, but it just feels a bit shit.
Dropped it half way through the Thailand level.

Wildcat Gun Machine (free on EGS)
Isometric twin-stick shooter. Looks and sounds nice, but sadly feels generic and basic as hell. The first level feels like a never-ending tutorial mission, and to compensate the boss gets a bazillion HP which is a red flag. I'm feeling like I'm just wasting my time waiting for it to get interesting, but reviews are middling too so I think I won't bother anymore.
Hades
Feels more similar to Bastion than I anticipated, and frankly I'm not excited about that. I liked Bastion for style and narrative, its combat just serviceable. They clearly refined it for Hades, but I still just can't get excited about the very nature of its combat. Idk, it's just not for me I guess.

sacked off a few this very day for reason below:
Powerwash Sim. Feck me this is boring. I only started as I thought it would go towards daily cheveo quest. But having spent an hour odd "cleaning" a bungalow for the cheveo not to pop, get to fuck!
Elex: I really tried with this (I have played and completed many PB games, so know their USP), but spending 20 hours in game and yet I am dying in almost every encounter and even the campaign has me going up against enemies with skulls over their health bar and me getting killed in 2/3 attacks, it is time to move on. This quit hurts the most. I still have the second to start/not start.
Vampire Survivors: Have enjoyed my time, but again life is to short. It is a good game though, I accept that.
There are all off the Xbox now.

Deathloop
Just about to meet/kill Julianna but I've lost the drive to play it. It's been a lot of fun at times but I've done the loop and killed the visionaries so many times I don't feel like I'll be missing out by taking them all out in one run. Story and characters aren't really the games' strongest suit either so I don't feel any impetus to see the end. AI is pretty awful and the maps aren't distinct enough from each other.
Better than Dishonored but not as good as the sequel. About as good as Prey.
Arkane are so close to creating a masterpiece but there's just something missing from their games I can't quite put my finger on.

The story is a nice change from saving the world. It's a small story about a little group of extraordinary weirdos. I found the ending really bitter sweet. It's like the end of a really great holiday and everyone is sad to be going home You can complete the final run in no time at all and there's really not much after that I just started a second playthrough without using Aether

I may go back to it and finish it off at some point but I think I'm done with it for now.

Marathon
Bungie's first claim to fame, and pretty much what Mac users wanted since Doom wasn't available. To its credit, the game dispenses with standard colored keys, and makes you go around the levels pressing switches and solving puzzles. A bit like the thinking man's Doom. And the story is much more interesting than the average shooter of the era, as expected from Bungie. I also want to mention the very nice soundtrack. Together with the visual style, it really conveys the feeling of being stranded in a space station with invading aliens.
But it's got one too many issues. The puzzles include platforming, which is not great in a game where you can't jump, also add all the backtracking and some later levels get annoying quite fast. Shooting doesn't feel so great, and the game enjoys throwing lots of enemies in tight corridors, many of which spawn out of nowhere. It doesn't help that there are long stretches without save points. And while the visuals are nice, there just isn't enough variation.
It was fun at first, but it was starting to feel like a chore now. I was on level 15, and apparently there are 26 levels, so I wasn't close enough to the end to justify pushing through.

Aren't they making a new marathon game, may have paid to wait for that.

Somerville. It's only supposed to be 3ish hours long, but even 3 minutes of those clunky controls was more than enough for me.

I'm willing to give 2 a try and see if it fixes some of those issues. There must be a reason if Bungie ported that one to XBLA, maybe it's the better game.

I abandoned that pretty quickly too dfunked, the game would have worked better on a single plane like his previous 2 games. It's a shame as I was quite interested in seeing where it went until I actually got into playing it.

Arkane are so close to creating a masterpiece but there's just something missing from their games I can't quite put my finger on. Really depends on who you ask with them. There's a small youtube channel by a person that really loves Arx Fatalis for instance. The first Dishonored came closest to being that Arkane masterpiece for me. Story and structure worked better than in the second one even though gameplay and replayability and mission variety are probably better in 2. Prey doesn't quite have the atmosphere that especially the first Dishonored has. It feels a bit horror-ish early on, but otherwise kind of sterile. Perhaps the setting is just too close too realism.
Certainly quite interested in how Deathloop will work for me, but I'm holding off on it until it drops a bit further.

Were there no other games of interest in that recent Humble Bundle? I essentially got Deathloop for $8/5 games *smug*

I don't follow Humble Bundle, but as far as I can see it would mostly just have been Deathloop.

Not sure how far through I was, but there was a big open chamber with a massive thing in the middle. If you attacked it then you got swarmed by loads of aliens. I killed all of them, but I was then entirely unable to find any way forward - and I looked *hard*. This is going back close to 25 years now and I’m still not sure whether I missed something or whether it was a bug.

If so, you were fairly close to the end, only three or four levels left. I got stuck there for a long time too. In the end I managed to find some invisible doors (not actually invisible, but the scarce lighting wasn't doing the door textures any favors). Tbf the entire second half of the game is full of annoying stuff like that. And the long stretches without save points (some levels don't have any, sending you back to the previous level when you die) make things even worse. Still, it's finished now, so I can start Marathon 2 someday.

Two recent EGS freebies.
Death Stranding -- feels more like a movie than a game, and after an hour (5 minutes of which were spent actually playing) nothing interesting happened. Watched a few reviews to learn what awaits you later in the game, and that only confirmed my disinterest. Moving on.
Severed Steel -- first-person acrobatics platformer. Looks nice but it seems I don't like first-person acrobatic platformers (abandoned another one that was free on EGS earlier, and didn't like Mirror's Edge either). I'd probably be more interested if it was 3rd person or 2D, but alas.

F.I.S.T., the EGS freebie metroidvania from a few days ago.
Grey, monotonous, repetitive. Gameplay is generic as hell, which is surprising considering you're an anthropomorphic hare with a giant metal fist on his back. Wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the padding, mostly by making everything longer, making enemies spongier, and repeating everything over and over again. I'm tempted to say more, but I'd just be, well, repeating myself.
I might have considered finishing it if it was less than half the size, but after a 160-minutes downward slope of enjoyment I'm at only 18% according to the game. No thanks.

I've binned off a few in quick succession since Christmas (mostly ps+ backlog).
- Heavenly bodies: quite like the idea but half an hour convinced me the controls would drive me nuts. Binned. - Doom Eternal: briefly went back after a 6 month break and everything that annoyed me (crap platforming, poor signposting, overly chaotic encounters) came flooding back. Binned. - A plague tale innocence: initially quite liked the pace and atmosphere but I foresee it plodding on in much the same way all the way through. Probably binned.
All of which drags me inexorably towards buying Elden Ring before the sale ends and bashing my head against that until Easter. Merry 2023!

Painkiller: Black Edition (Steam)
I was bored by the third level. It does the Serious Sam thing of throwing waves at you but lacks the colour or interesting weapons early on to keep you hooked. There was some strange physics going on as well with bodies/the character being occasionally launched across the room for some reason which was irritating.

More or less my review of it, though I did get to the end. It was one of the games of the era clearly inspired by Serious Sam (the other being the very much unknown Will Rock, which I've never played other than the demo). But it lacked its charm and the weapons didn't feel as good. Well, the devs went on to make Bulletstorm, so it's all (mostly) forgiven.
