My advice is to not over think it, don't give it some ham fisted meaning because you feel you need to.
Sometimes people just like stuff, art is something only you can say is good or not.
I overthought it and ended up with cocks (don't ask) since then... always just found artists I like and for a few just said to them I like what you do, just "free hand it" treat it truly like a commissioned piece of art that you would hang on your wall. I've been much happier with my tattoo choices since that realisation
Personally for me, I would avoid characters, or anything too "obvious" but that's me..you do you.
If all else fails get an all black sleeve, as that always looks fucking cool.

Saw a black sleeve that was clearly done as a cover up recently (you could still see the outlines of the old tats) and it looked absolutely awful imo.
