Sorry to be a downer but the first thing Putin did when announcing the invasion was to make a veiled nuclear threat against anyone thinking of interfering. We need to stop pretending that anything they say or sign matters anymore. For MAD doctrine to work the other side has to believe you might push the button. Putins latest outburst could just be to reinforce that, or he could mean it. The problem is IMO the current US president too obviously wouldn't press the button and the previous one would too happily do it for no good reason. What a world. |

I wouldn't say that. Germany putting the kibosh on the Nordstream 2 pipeline was surprising. They've already fronted billions into it, and it goes against a lack of appetite for economic sanctions amongst some EU members. Don't underestimate German conscience and will to do the right thing I guess (post 1940s). Let's hope this might actually cause governments to get serious about reducing dependence on fossil fuels, you know, in a way that civilisation ending climate change hasn't. Haha, good one. |

Most Russians will never see those photos...
It's being reported as an attempt to land troops deep inside Ukraine, but also as being rebuffed. Two Russian helicopters shot down.
There's also reports circulating showing photos of all sorts of broken down Russian vehicles abandoned on the roads into Ukraine. They might have a massive army and loads of equipment, but lots and lots of it is old and unmaintained.

Mark Francois has got all his gear on and is bobbing up and down excitedly, waiting for his phone to ring... Serious answer: we have nearly 2000 troops in the area (Lithuania, Ukraine etc) for "training purposes", purportedly to train local forces. These are mostly spec ops types (1&2 PARA and so on). We have a rapid reaction force on pretty much permanent standby (16th Air Assault Combat brigade). Mobilising much more would be a major undertaking for which we're unlikely to be prepared or for that matter and probably far more importantly, currently willing to do. |

Sad fact is that thanks to decisions in the post decade of so we are close to irrelevant.
Our sanctions don't really matter, our military doesn't matter and our attempts at diplomacy don't matter.
We just sit back and watch what the US, China and the EU do.
On a moral level it would be good if action could at least be taken against all the Russian billionaires laundering money through London, but, they're all Boris's tennis buddies so...

It might seem like we are xenophobic blinkered Brexit mad twits. The reality is quite different. I'd be amazed if this conflict had support from the average citizen in Russia. |

I did, ironically, see a mildly amusing 'Brexit Benefit' meme tweet, saying that the EU had managed to act much more swiftly and harshly due to the fact the UK weren't still in the EU and dragging their heels lol
