It's alright, everyone. Liz Truss has summoned the Russian ambassador to explain himself. I feel safer already. We've been listening to Russian ambassadors and foreign ministers in the news for days, any official ambassadorial meeting will go the same, they're just going to repeat the line that Russian military build up and action is a response to what they claim is Western and anti-Russian activity in Ukraine and they're just acting to protect themselves and their citizens. They're just playing us for mugs basically because they know we're not going to respond militarily, and they've already decided they can afford or accept whatever sanctions we put on them.

That's it. All this talk of sanctions. I'm pretty sure that's been weighed up by the Russians, and they've gone in anyway, so bleating about imposing more is surely going to do fuck all.

Realistically, we've let them act with impunity for a couple of decades now and unsurprisingly, it has emboldened them. The time to stop all of this stuff was years ago, but our leaders just saw the money and grabbed as much as they could without a thought for the consequences. If we impose the sort of sanctions that would actually affect Putin (ie, seizing all of his mates' assets and taking them into custody, blocking Russia's access to global finance and the internet at network levels, blocking sales of Russian Oil and Gas), it will likely trigger a global recession the likes of which hasn't been seen before. Which world leaders are going to want to be remembered for that? They care about their ratings and their pockets, not the people of Ukraine.

In news that might actually help people's nerves about the situation, at least it did for me, but US, Russia, UK, France and China all signed a treaty at the beginning of the year to agree that nuclear war should never be possible. www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jan/03/five-nations-pledge-avoid-nuclear-warDoesn't however excuse the fact that people in Ukraine are going to be put through a lot and that Putin's a cunt.

dogbot Exactly, this is just all "seen to be doing something whilst not really doing anything" type shit. I wouldn't say that. Germany putting the kibosh on the Nordstream 2 pipeline was surprising. They've already fronted billions into it, and it goes against a lack of appetite for economic sanctions amongst some EU members. Don't underestimate German conscience and will to do the right thing I guess (post 1940s).

I should have clarified that perhaps as more from a UK point of view. Can't believe we've got this floppy prick guiding us through a pandemic and now this.

I'd want enormous sanctions, SWIFT blocked, travel of the elite blocked, to cripple Russia but have sanctions ever really worked? Depends on what you want to achieve. It's not going to save Ukraine or get rid of Putin but at this point it seems clear that any money going from the west to Russia (or letting them move their money here) is just going to be fueling our own security problems. Until there's a complete change in political structure in Russia there's not going to be any normalisation of our relationship and diplomacy is worthless with a country that gleefully rejects reality and just does not give a fuck about anything. Working towards excising Russia from our economies might be necessary just as an act of self defence. Not that I think it will happen because nobody seems willing to take an economic hit to stand up for their purportedly precious morals these days. The problem is Putin only respects force and strength (like Trump). He's also getting real old and seems to have gone genuinely wrong in the head. It's entirely possible he just doesn't give a fuck about any consequences anymore. Sorry to be a downer but the first thing Putin did when announcing the invasion was to make a veiled nuclear threat against anyone thinking of interfering. We need to stop pretending that anything they say or sign matters anymore.

Let's hope this might actually cause governments to get serious about reducing dependence on fossil fuels, you know, in a way that civilisation ending climate change hasn't.

There's reports that Germany and Italy are dragging their heels on further EU sanctions, though, so it may be only temporary.

No one is actually genuinely worried about nuclear war are they? Considering I've had family, coworkers and Putin himself reminding me of 'immediate' action if anyone was to get involved then I found it a hard thing to shake off my mind, despite knowing deep down the chances of it happening are very slim.
