Age of Empires any good if you adored Alpha Centauri? If it is turn based empire building you are after, there is of course Civ 6, but there is also a game called Age Of Wonders : Planetfall, which is a sci-fi strategy. Bit janky, but pretty deep and varied if you stick with it, you have to build armies for tactical battles as well as grow your empire. There is a free trial if you fancy it.

Yeah it's pathetic. Would rather just be given £5 on my account balance every month.

Gosh, they dump you in at the deep end with Scorn don't they? It's even difficult to describe the puzzles. Yes the first puzzle was 10/10 bs. I had to Google and youtube it and even then it was still shit and annoying to do.. I thought I'd have a quick 30 min blast on Scorn last night and I wondered if I was being an idiot, or the game does indeed throw you right in at the deep end. After pulling all the levers I could find, I think I generally see what the first huge puzzle is about, so I'll have a go at working it out tonight. I'm generally shit at working out abstract puzzles unless I'm in the right mindset, but I'm going to resist consulting Google for as long as possible... I don't like the sound of the first puzzle being "shit" and "annoying to do" even when you know the solution though! I do like the fact that I can take my time figuring things out though, whilst admiring the game's artwork, without any additional pressures. My only disappointment so far is the lack of HDR. I find it odd that the Series X can present 15 year old games like Oblivion in 'Auto HDR' but not brand new ones. I guess 'Auto HDR' still requires games to support it, so it's not exactly "auto".

We're finally getting around to picking up a Series S for the bedroom. Its partly out of fear the prices may rise for it after Xmas, but partly because we're losing the One X we've been looking after for the past year. Its gonna take a little getting used to the lower storage size and lack of disc drive. I'll have games I can only play in the living room, etc...
Obviously I'm very fortunate to own two Xboxes. I shouldn't be complaining.

Quick question: Elite Controller - is it worth it? Son asked for it for Christmas, I saw the price and laughed.

I never used one for actual gaming, but I've tested one and fiddled around with it for a bit. Maybe consider letting them get a custom labs controller instead? Its far cheaper and they can go nuts with the colours.

Will explore that - cheers.
If the Elite was a massive step up, happy to get it as his main present - just didn't realize controllers could be that much (getting old and out of the gaming loop - only just started the 1st God of War, but should probably not mention that in here haha)

Unfortunately I'll have to wait until MS bring out a new console to replace the Series X in the lounge before the bedroom setup improves.

I'm of the opinion that they aren't, but that's due to my use case, mostly. I tend to play third person action games and RPGs that don't typically make use of every button on the controller at the same time. If he's big into competitive multiplayer shooters where he needs to constantly use the face buttons, triggers and camera sticks together, he might get better use out of it, by mapping some of those functions to the back paddles. I got one from Amazon Warehouse earlier in the year for 60 quid and wouldn’t pay any more than that. Was unopened and must have just been a return.

Yeah, got an Amazon warehouse deal too - £67 back in April. Mine was clearly a return though due to half a reel of parcel tape around the box. Perfect condition, but had a random power off issue and wouldn't come back on unless you plugged it in to charge.
Registered it with MS and sent back to them and the replacement has been flawless. Well worth risking it for that price as they're bloody lovely controllers.

I think the cheapest used on Amazon is around the £80 at the moment.
If you'd prefer new, buying the core controller and a third party paddle set could save a few quid.

I'm really tempted to get the new elite controller that's £115, got nearly half of it in Microsoft reward points so will bite when I can add less than £50 to it.

I got an elite, but tbh it's a big heavy. The Series s/X controller came along which is excellent and I have mostly just used that. But the elite has paddles which the younger gen will probably find more useful....

Yeah, agree on the weight. I know a lot of people like the heft, but as you say, Series X controller feels pretty much perfect. Love the d-pad on it too.

I wonder if we'll get any FPS Boost games soon. The last batch was almost exactly a year ago, for the 20th anniversary of Xbox. And the 21st anniversary is tomorrow.
Because if we don't, it would sure feel like they just dropped support for anything BC at this point.

What external storage is everyone using? I've had 2 Seagate 2TB HDs die on me after about a year so I'm thinking time to go with a different make.

After upgrading to an NVMe, I decided to just buy a cheap USB enclosure and connected the old drive to the Series S. It's not much, but it's extra space to keep backward compatible games nearly for free.

2TB Samsung QVO that I got last cyber Monday IIRC and chucked in an enclosure. It's nice and quick when moving SX optimised stuff back to the internal drive to play.
If I ever actually pull my finger out and run a network cable it'll become less needed mind you. Download speeds are pretty terrible over WiFi (in comparison to the PS5 anyway)

That was the last batch of BC games, they said as much, but they never said it was going to be the last batch of FPS Boost games. The page even still says "this list will be updated as more games are supported", a line which the BC page doesn't show. But meh, at this point, I'm pretty sure we are not getting anymore.

There was an interview about a week later with Jason Ronald who said
"Our current technique has already enabled us to enhance Xbox One and Xbox 360 games, and while we will continue to look for new ways to improve other titles, we have nothing more to announce in the near future. For now, we have reached our limits."
So yeah, while maybe not officially cancelled it has been quietly swept under the carpet and forgotten about.

I still think that, for all the fuss MS made about their BC programs, they never were all that important to users. FPS Boost only lasted less than a year.
Companies now also seem to release XS/PS5 patches fairly often, which kind cancels the need for such a program in the first place.

Still disappointing looking at some of the 360 games not BC.
