I don't think you should have children. The school run would be horrific

That's a bit dark when the main part I'm referring to is Newt getting caught and Ripley saying they don't kill their victims Yeah, because the rest of the xenomorph concept is so happily bright.

The problem is that the 1st one comes across as really generic these days, due to having been copied so many times.
Weirdly, even though Aliens has been so indirectly influential on pop culture and games in particular, I don't think many movies have as directly followed it.
I've seen several people watch Alien for the first time and basically call out the entire plot and who was going to live and die in the first 10 minutes. Plus all the cheesy cat-scares. I mean, people call out Prometheus characters for being dumb, but the Alien characters make them look like geniuses. With the benefit of hindsight!
The reason the Prometheus characters seem dumber is probably that we've all seen all the Alien inspired movies and now know what not to do!
Not that it wasn't pretty innovative at the time. Though I guess you could say Halloween got there first.

I watched Aliens before the first film, and will always hold first place. But only just as they are both damn fine films.

The crew of the Nostromo were basically truck drivers to be fair. Prometheus was an expedition of the finest scientists, engineers and brainiacs money could buy

Voted Aliens and wasn't surprise to see it's pretty much 50/50. Quite a few franchises that I'd imagine getting similar splits eg Back to Future One Vs Two

I mean, people call out Prometheus characters for being dumb, but the Alien characters make them look like geniuses. With the benefit of hindsight! The reason the Prometheus characters seem dumber is probably that we've all seen all the Alien inspired movies and now know what not to do! The root of the problem with Prometheus and Covenant is not just the stupidity, but characters making decisions that don’t make sense for their character. In Alien, the characters are essentially Space Truckers. The character work is fine. In Prometheus they are all meant to be the cream of the sciences / top of their field, but dumb shit happens like the map-making guy gets lost (when no one else does), the biologist guys runs away from dead aliens in fear then tries to hug a penis monster while going “coochie coo!” It’s ludicrous writing, terrible. Crushed by a magic doughnut that happens to come directly at you and you don’t think to just step aside, dumb. Relying on coincidence and characters making unbekievable decisions to further plot is terrible screenwriting. And in both prequels, these science people take off their masks on an alien planet first chance they get, as if pathogens aren’t even possibly an issue. Neither Alien nor Aliens have moments where, as a viewer, I’m groaning because of some kind of super-obvious science fiction problem or characters making decisions that are totally out of character, not believable.

Fair point.
Though having met a few scientific people at the top of their field, I'm not all that sure it's unrealistic ;-)

Went for Aliens. I just prefer it overall, for the reasons others have already cited. Alien is an undeniable classic though.
Whilst Prometheus is full of dumb decisions, I still don't think the crashing spaceship is necessarily one of them. I don't think it's totally unrealistic that somebody would panic in that situation and not think clearly, I think similar things have happened in real life with falling trees and such.
I have a much bigger problem with the other dumb decisions in the film.

Agree, I know people always say “why not run sideways from the rolling ship” but I think of all the dumb decisions that one gets a free pass from me.
I’ve never had a giant spaceship wheeling after me but I don’t think I’d be thinking rationally if it did happen

Come on Aliens! You can do it! though someone should really give at least one vote to the poor crappy Joss Whedon one! It wasn't that awful. Sigourney Weaver as a [redacted] was good enough to earn at least one vote... maybe even 2 votes for the basketball scene.

I watched that one recently. It's pretty terrible. It's so 90s and low budget. Looks more like a Species sequel than an Alien one.

I actually have kind of a soft spot for Resurrection. I'd certainly rather watch it than anything that came after it.

As a teen I’d read all the spin-off novels that had come out up to that point and have a big soft spot for Resurrection as its basically one of them. Plus its a fun late 90s action film.

Best part of Resurrection is the chick's butt early on. Glorious.

I watched a bunch of films in hangover mode yesterday and Aliens on Disney Plus was one of them. First time I'd seen the none Directors cut for ages. It definitely works better as a film without the bit at the start. I did miss the turret bit though.
It's definitely aged worse than Alien though, which is a solid 10/10. Aliens closer to an 8 or a 9.

Here’s a thing
Most director’s cuts are adding additional footage, right?
Can anyone think of many other films like Alien DC which is shorter and has chunks of alternative rather than extra scenes?

Nah Director's Cut is like 19 minutes extra. I remember from getting the VHS for my brother's Christmas one year - classic!

'Cut' is referring to the overall final cut of the film, not a director cutting bits out. They're suppose to be their idea of how the film should have been before the studio made edits for mass market. Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're saying

Then I am sorry for that
Anyway, Resurrection has always felt like a comic book/graphic novel adaptation of Alien to me. It's too stylish and glossy. Not necessarily terrible (it's watchable) but not in keeping with the tone of the earlier films
