It is slightly counterintuitive that games companies front loading profits with high prices has meant my overall spend on games is actually down.
I play just as many games, I just will not pay the whale price for them.

I can recall that Virtua Racing for the Megadrive was 70 quid on release.
The Streetfighter 2 port on the same system had a RRP of 60 on release.
Those are outliers but I think most big games at that time were 30 - 40 quid on release. Taking that into account I don't think console games are vastly more expensive. Especially when you consider how much more goes into game development these days.

Street Fighter 2 Turbo was 75 dollars for the SNES. I'm not sure how people are trying to retcon history that console games weren't expensive back in the 90s. And yeah I bought Mortal Kombat 4 for my n64 for 70 quid from Dixons with all my saved up pocket money. I regret that purchase to this day.

Yeah, £50-70 sounds about right for SNES/N64. PC games were more like £30-40. I wasn't paying then and had little concept of money so they are definitely much more expensive now

Console games were a lot more expensive in the 90s but the market was also nowhere near the size it is now.

Sega and nintendo games with more memory chips were more expensive, sure these companies controlled the supply? Most games were £40+ ish new in the 16bit days.

A small TV used to cost so much we had to rent them but as we bought more and got better at making them, the price came down.
I’m not sure why people always handwave away economies of scale and process improvements for video games.

Pretty sure I remember my mum paying £70 for Phoenix on the Atari 2600/VCS!

The development was nowhere near the size it is now either. I haven't got so exact figures but I'm pretty sure more people work on, I dunno, FIFA '25 then worked on FIFA '96 (was there a 96?)
Games have largely gotten much, much bigger, and often requires large amounts of shitty crunch time in development.
If you look at games that are comparable in size to the flagship games of the '90s you'll be looking at indie games, and those *are* cheaper.
Of course there was no micro transactions back in the day.
Generally speaking I'm not too bothered by game prices as I rarely buy anything at launch

Oh man I do miss game rentals. Rushing to complete a game before you had to give it back. Apart from The Lion King, I only recently learnt that it was made more difficult on purpose to get people to buy it rather than renting it.

Weird memories of going to Blockbuster video to rent games. Our local video rental shop did video games too.

This does also go back to ‘nobody asked games to be this expensive’.
Like, for example, Armoured Core 6. I installed it, booted it up, checked ‘performance mode’ was on and started playing. I will never play fidelity mode as I suspect most other people won’t so why even spend resources on it?

I guess because developers always want to push things and there are obviously a lot of people who want graphics to be pushed. Like the people who spend over a grand on a graphics card and want it to be constantly pushed. I don't think that's going to stop anytime soon.

Consumers very rarely ask exactly for the thing we’re given, it’s a bit of a redundant argument. Generally, people don’t know what they want, and often what they think they want they don’t.

We know what we want. Remasters of our old favourite games. Come on we're all jaded old men.

No joke but I would love a remaster of the Motorstorm games. It's shit that so many games are stuck on the ps3.

Not really. Im no market analyst but it seems like one of the reasons Ubisoft have taken such a big dump is that people know what they want and it isn’t what they are peddling.

I actually have no problem with cost of things. It's time I lack... If I had more time then maybe the cost would be an issue
