DLC1 is the game at its best. You have everything and you fight everything and it uses the encounter spaces themselves to make it interesting. It's like a good custom wad for the most part.
DLC2 is a fucking mess though, every new enemy in it is of the "you just use this gun and this fire mode only" variety, or the "wait until it does a specific move in let you kill it" type, minus the stupid poison guys who just completely ruin the game.

I forgot how annoying I find Doom when it comes to secrets. Like, I remember where they should be, but forget how to trigger some of them. Some of them are simple enough, but still somehow obtuse (like reaching one room first before a door, wall or lift moves in another room). I don’t want to look for guides either so I quickly get frustrated trying to find them and then annoyed when I inevitably give up and move on to the next stage.
I was only a few stages into the first game, trying to weigh up a full playthrough, but I think I’ll shelve it for another time.

I tend to just have a look around for any I missed at the end of a level until I get fed up then move on. You shouldn't really need to find any out of necessity

I agree. It’s entirely a me thing. I don’t need to find them all, but it’s just what my brain wants at the moment.

Tell your brain shut up I want to play some Doom
I've played through them loads and still haven't found all the secrets. I tend to like that though (like not finding all the hearts in Zelda) as I like knowing the game still has something left to discover
Same reason I never bother with trophies. Getting the platinum or whatever it is on Xbox is too final. I've only ever got 2 and my interest in those games dropped off a cliff

I’m better with achievements, but I’ve played so much Doom I kinda want to achieve more than I managed last time I played.

If this is classic doom, unless you're pistol starting, definitely agree don't get too hung up on secret hunting. They tend to be a lot more valuable playing from pistol start.

They've updated the doom 1 and doom 2 pack. Still no mouselook

I asked the dev about that a while back, the answer was basically "no, I'm not doing it".
In fairness, it'd look like shit because there's no actual hardware rendering going on in this port, it's software wrapped in GPU presentation, so it'd warp and look dreadful.

Yup, I know it looks shit. But I need it!

Finished TNT Evilution today. The middle levels felt like a slog, but the first and final thirds were pretty decent, I guess? Some overly convoluted maps though. I still wouldn't rate Evilution much higher than the Master Levels, which makes me wonder why Doom fans seem to care for the former while shunning the latter.
Some palate cleansers, and then I can start Plutonia Experiment, which hopefully will be a little shorter. It may not seem like it, but 30 levels full of monsters is quite a lot to run through.

I don't think Doom fans generally really rate TNT tbh

Plutonia Experiment is... hard. I'm already halfway through however. The levels themselves are short, but on UV it does feel like a big step up in difficulty over every other games, except maybe the first couple levels of Thy Flesh Consumed.
And yes, I have Gone 2 It.

Go 2 It is as hard is that one gets, unsurprisingly. Plutonia is super influential on custom wad stuff.

After that, infighting took take of most of the other enemies. And playing these Final Doom levels has made me really hate Revenants and Arch-viles. And Mancubi too. And Pain Elementals. And chain gun zombies hidden in alcoves or in the far distance... Actually, I think most of the Doom 2 enemies are super annoying.

I've never liked the random revenant homing rockets but I like all the rest of 2s additions, except the fucking pain elementals.

Pain elementals are just a fucking bane.
If you play hell revealed, all other wads pale into easy mode. Facking brutal.

Plutonia is done too! So much for palate cleansers, I just went straight into it. Mind, it was fairly short.
Anyway, I'm of two minds about it. On one hand, it feels tighter and better designed than TNT Evilution... but the massive hordes do get a bit frustrating at times. And it still has the usual issues with switches that operate doors too far away to remember about. Also, it sure loves its chaingunners sniping you from small windows in the far off distance.
Only NRFTL and legacy of Rust are left now. I do have a couple more relaxing games in the backlog that need to be cleared... but the occasional level in between won't hurt.

NRFTL is probably the best "official" episode in terms of a "vanilla" experience that isn't a total ballbreaker on UV.

NRFTL done too, and it was a lot harder than I expected. Lots of encounters with tons of enemies in very cramped spaces. Reminded me of Thy Flesh Consumed, and I daresay it was harder than even Plutonia in places, at least on UV. Running out of shotgun ammo was also a common occurrence.
I finished Sigil before, so all that's left now is Legacy of Rust. After nearly 60 hours, it's time for something a bit new. Those achievements look interesting...

I've completed the first episode of Legacy of Rust, and well, it sure wasn't playing around. And I hear the second episode is even worse. Joy...

I've been playing Wrath: Aeon of Ruin on and off. It's obviously got some Arcane Dimensions inspiration in the level design with very impressive sprawling, interconnected levels with tons of secrets.
It's got a really odd save system where quicksaves are an item you collect (though you can turn that off). It doesn't bother me except for when going for secrets that involve tricky jumps as it discourages just quicksaving before trying so you don't have to climb back up. I just turn it off and save then turn it back on again at those points.
It's weirdly restrictive with ammo and for the first 5 levels, doesn't really give any massively effective way to deal with enemies at long range which makes combat a bit awkward. With the start of episode 2 though it's feeling a lot better now I've got a railgun.

Assume you're on PC but the console versions are running on a different engine (Unity, I think). Was initially interested in it for the level design but it sounds like a terrible port job

For Wrath? That'd surprise me, its whole thing is that it's a Quake engine game.

Yeah, there's features missing or not working properly because of the engine switch. At least it's authentically retro in that the console version is a different game

That's interesting - I genuinely cannot find anything mentioning that online. Are you sure it's this game?

I liked Arcane Dimensions, but it was obviously more of an attempt to show off just how large and cool-looking and convoluted maps could be on their updated Quake engine, rather than actually fun to play through. I had heard that Wrath is similar, and as I've had my fill of that, I gave it a pass. Dimension of the Machine is more how I'd expect a big Quake map to play like.

I think the extra enemy variety in AD gives it a boost over DotM but I do enjoy both. Weird. Wonder why they didn't port darkplaces. Maybe license issues?
