That video on last page looked like a complete rip off of Sekiro. Which is perhaps no bad thing.

Had a quick half an hour this morning before. Didn't manage to finish the character creator. Getting you to do two characters is brutal.

The combat is taking some getting used to. And it's not fucking about early on.

I just can't get the timing down for the parry at all. I end up just going back to dodging and attacking bit it's definitely something you're going to need to use.

I feel like I’m getting the hang of parrying. But still it’s a few hits, before I actually parry.. but then other times, I’m slicing them up.

Yeah I'm enjoying this a lot now it's clicking. Combat feels great and is nicely brutal. It's not actually that bad looking a game either really.

Visually, it looks better than Dragon’s Dogma 2, which I also think looks good. Maybe it’s on par, like they trade blows. Both look better in cutscenes than gameplay, with a blend of high poly count and the occasional muddy texture that stands out against the otherwise stellar environmental textures. Ronin seems to run at a higher resolution, or at least it has less checkerboarding signs like pixellated outlines and foliage.
Combat here is smooth. Tough but accessible. Stealth is nice, traversal is nice.
Unless it changes as I progress through the story (I’m super early still), I wish both Veiled Edges had different combat styles. As it is for me now, they both share a weapon and skill set, which is like a more logical take on Sekiro’s dying twice mechanic, but if they had their own set of skills, I’d have more incentive to swap.

This game is absurdly addictive. I look forward to every fight, and yet I'm also bolstering my stealth abilities e.g. pulling enemies up to me when on a rooftop with the grappling hook is a stealth kill that won't get old quickly.
Oh, and I've just been running around with Sakamoto Ryoma. Which is nice.
I'm very impressed so far. My main complaint is the dumb AI: come across a much tougher enemy and you can injure him with a stealth attack, run away, wait five seconds for him to lose you and return to his position: rinse, repeat. I don't recommend it, it's pretty tedious.
I'm upgrading my dual swords skills - really hoping to unlock a third martial skill soon as using these is very gratifying.

It has petting cats as an objective, it's a 10/10 on that alone /hj

I am searching for cats as a matter of priority. Never mind the future direction of Japan!

Visually, it looks better than Dragon’s Dogma 2, which I also think looks good. Wow, seriously? I’ve spent hundreds of hours in Nioh 1/2 and Wo Long, but in the end decided for DD2 to play first (only a matter of when, not if I get RotR), but it looks like arse in every video I’ve seen. I am actually tempted to buy RotR on top of DD2, but it does not seem like the most reasonable idea…

Yeah. The modeling and resolution are better. Also there’s actual options here. Quality, Performance, Ray-Tracing. You’re stuck with what you get in DD2.
They’re both good games and worth playing, but if you made your choice based off graphics, you chose wrong.
Dragon’s Dogma probably wins in textures though.

I‘ve not made my choice on graphics, which should be clear if you’ve actually read my comment, I was just wondering about your observation. The videos must be very misleading.

I read your comment, but it wasn’t clear, because your comment only mentioned the visuals.

This is giving me terrible Sekiro vibes…
Can you kill anyone without having to parry them? In very early on but it feels a bit “spot the tell and press a button with split second timing to win” so far.

Probs just to level up a bit and get used to it, but it feels like I’m just brushing people with my sword unless I can stagger them with a parry.
This is going to end in tears, I can tell.

That's what annoyed me about Wo Long, felt like your attacks did nothing in some boss fights.

Yeah you can definitely kill without parrying, just got to be aggressive. I think it's definitely going to be a massive part of the game though.
I'm hoping the combat evolves as you level up though, already starting to feel a bit one note. Graphics are pretty rough now I'm in the open world. It's all a bit Aldi Ghost of Tsushima at the minute.
