I’ll probably still buy the PS6 and whatever the new Nintendo is called, but I can’t see myself getting the next Xbox, the way they’re running their business.

They really fucked it after the 360, I still don't even know what the new ones called. The names have been terrible since the 360.
They will probably move away from consoles and just focus on gamepass anyway.

360 was a truly terrible name for a console too.

I don’t think Stuz is arsed anymore, they haven’t replied since the top of page one! Stuz, earlier today:

If I remember correctly it was Xbox One, which was PS4 rival. Then series S and series X which were PS5 rivals I think that’s right without looking up

You can hardly call it a rival.

If I was looking back on the last 7 years since the Switch came out, I would say that is still the most fun console/handheld I own. I still like my AAA gaming on PS5, Series X etc, but becoming a jaded older man, there’s something about Nintendo that reignites the passion for gaming. Steam Deck/Portal has somewhat replaced indie games I was buying on Switch. Although I mostly play really old 00s games on my Deck. I think next gen I really need to be sensible, and not buy so many consoles/handhelds.. I’m getting jaded too. Some on here may know me as something of a collector, but my PS5 library is like five games total. For me it started with the £70 price tag for games. Coupled with the lack of time involved in getting older and having my own family, I’ve actually never got around to buying stuff, even after the prices dropped, which is what I thought I was waiting for. The recent Xbox stuff and the massive layoffs everywhere has made me think that the whole console concept is about to fundamentally change. It kind of feels like we’re at the start of it all fading away. I have no idea how long it’ll be but I think TV gaming will be reduced to an app that you launch from your smart TV

I barely need to tinker with my PC even when playing games on Ubuntu.
Ultimately though it's just the genre of games for me. I had a 360 and PS3 when I worked for PS, but the big things on PS (God of War, Uncharted, Last of Us) rarely did anything for me so they say unused. I did take days off work for XCOM coming out, bury hours in Total War and find the idea of playing BG3 with a controller upsetting. Horses for courses and all that.
The Nintendo does get use though.

If* everything moves to cloud gaming / streaming / subscription then at some point the hardware isn't going to matter.
You'll be streaming the same game whether you play it on your phone, your ipad, the box under your tv or your pc.
What are we going to argue about enjoy discussing then?
*mind you, they've been saying that's going to happen for years. But subscription at least seems to be taking off.

If* everything moves to cloud gaming / streaming / subscription then at some point the hardware isn't going to matter. I doubt it's going to happen. Cloud computing works, because load on business applications varies a lot, so it makes sense to pool resources to max out hardware. Also, latency is usually not that important, which allows for bigger concentration of hardware in fewer datacenters, which allows the cloud provider to bring external costs down a lot.
Gaming on the other hand has a near constant load per client (of course, it depends on the game, but if we talk about popular games like Fortnite etc.) and needs low latency, so you need lots of datacenters close to customers. It's just a much worse fit for the cloud.
What still could make it happen, is if gaming hardware and machine learning hardware would stay pretty much interchangeable. Then I could see a dual use of that hardware, by assigning it to gaming in general, and to train ML systems on it during downtimes (during the night and working hours, mostly). But at the moment, you can probably make more money by assigning it 100% to ML training.

It’s been quite a while since I had a ‘good’ pc. I’m not even sure why as most of the games I enjoy only really play well with M+K. I guess I can plug in my steam deck to those but it doesn’t look great.

Does steam deck not support wireless M+KBs?

Despite their age and generally jaded outlook on like, it's good that the fontgeekers still have their console wars spirit in them.

I guess I can plug in my steam deck to those but it doesn’t look great. Yeah I've rarely spent stupid money on my PC, probably 100-200 quid a year of constant upgrades since it first came into existence in 2004 (I only just got rid of a 2004 HDD this Christmas). Last few years it's probably been 200-300. Many years nothing, I used to always get GPUs that were 120 quid, though nowadays an X060 is fucking £400, but I spend that once every 4-5 years. Realistically it needs to compile code fast and play Crusader Kings 3 (or similar) most high end graphics games I will happily play at 30fps or just wait a few years. I only did a big rebuild over Black Friday because BG3 and Cyberpunk was maxing out my 6 year old CPU to the point I was worried (thought Total Warhammer 3.... not a sausage).

I use consoles to prevent me from saying things like "use case" Thats what happens when you game on a device built for doing work! I can only imagine what they sound like online. “As per our last round…” “Let’s put a pin in that strategy” “Excellent synergy, team!” “Let’s push the envelope and really get those numbers up next round.” “I just wanted to touch base as I’ve been carrying this flag for a while.”

The fact that the OP owns and has used consoles up until now suggests they know what the use case is.
That they’ve now decide that they don’t need them anymore doesn’t change their purpose.
You *can* wait for all the exclusives to turn up, or “emulate” the rest, but plenty of people don’t want that.

I've found myself thinking these things when gaming on my PC:
"Waiting times would be slashed if the NHS was run like Two Point Hospital" "Papers, Please is a model exemplar for how to stop the boats" "Larian should be called to a Select Committee over the distinct absence of player-pig action available in BG3. Enough of this woke bear nonsense." "Rushing across the plains of Horizon Zero Dawn is so evocative of running through the wheat fields in my childhood"

For me it's pretty simple. I need a PC while I don't need a console of any kind. For pretty much everything including work. Aside from that I haven't had a TV in a long while. Sure, it would be pretty convenient to actually be able to rely on being able to play the latest games without too much trouble, but consoles have to also eventually be replaced just like any PC. At least on the latter the chance is pretty good that most games will be available, while a ridiculous amount of them will never make it to any console. Backwards compatibility is also surprisingly good on modern systems.

I'm thinking of selling my pc soon while it's worth something and keeping the Ninja Foodi. The haptocs just feel better and chicken takes too long in the pc.
