There's just a little bit of magic running through this community.
A mix of Britishness plus all being on the older side plus frankness mixed with some razor wit. Love it. Really glad to see it's stayed intact and the vibe has survived all these years.

There are some folks still around here who had some famous checkered pasts/anecdotes which got traction on IRC.
I wonder if they're still known. Don't really want to out anyone.

I haven't drunk anything for over a decade now for the same reason. When I was younger it was *an issue* as people felt attacked when I said I wasn't drinking, but thankfully now people don't give as much of a shit. Can relate – white English male, not religious, no medical issues... I never got into alcohol (or been drunk...) and the looks/questions I would get from people during my 20s on nights out was so tiresome, verging on offended only a couple of times thankfully. The worst are boomer generation adults who view having an alcoholic drink together as some kind of male-bonding ritual. Narrowly dodged this last week in fact at my brother's wedding when his new father-in-law insisted we would have beers at the afterparty... thankfully he was waddling around talking to other people once it rolled round. The inevitable "why don't you drink?" has been perennially annoying in my lifetime. I used to just joke/lie in university and say stuff like "I had liver failure as a kid". Best immediate response to that I ever had was: "Does that mean you can't take paracetamol?!" Like that would be top of my list of woes.

Not drank for a week now, which is a silver lining of Covid. And I didn't have an urge to drink at all until I got annoyed and frustrated trying to play a game (I *really* shouldn't try to play things with twitch reaction times), and now I really just want something to make my brain shut up.

Is it bad that I bought 20 bottles of Pimm's today from Morrisons as they were on offer? Secreted them in the garage away from prying eyes, well I'm gonna drink them anyway so just seemed to make economic sense. 🙃

I’ve never been a big drinker, it’s probably close to 10 years since I was last drunk. It doesn’t even occur to me now to ever have more than a double whiskey but I have no alcohol in the house and have only finished off the last drops of some Bacardi this month to clear it out.
Having kids was probably the last nail in the coffin of ever drinking much, which is ironic when some days they make me want to drink several.
I work with someone who drinks a bottle of wine every single night plus some spirits. On any work thing he’s always the first to the bar and last to leave.

One thing I learned with my wife is whilst I was never an alcoholic, me and most of my close friends have had pretty unhealthy relationships with alcohol.
A stand out thing she recognised is we only talk about how any of us are actually feeling once we're drunk.
Sober us are "good", "fine", "yeah OK thanks."
Drunk us though go on to reveal crippling doubts about marriage, happiness, our jobs, our past traumas and there's a 50% change someone cries.
Being able to reflect on that, none of us grew up in households where we were asked how we feel or where someone wanted to listen to the answer.
Pretty much our common denominator is using some kind of booze or weed or whatever as a coping technique and I've certainly seen a huge reduction in how often I drink once I began to understand that.

I have a similar problem. Then the next morning I'm mad at myself for sharing.

I have been sober since first of July. Anyone who was a previously very heavy drinker but now isn't care to share insight on if giving up the grog improved these things (and potentially rough time estimates of how long it took to make a difference) No energy, shit sleep, body aches and pains, libido. Only thing that seems to have changed so far is my ADHD is much more noticeable to everyone around me

Stopping drinking doesn't help me, imo. I just get irrationally aggressive. I went six months dry and then was just like fuck this.
At the moment I limit myself to 2 drinks per night out and none at home, which seems like an okay compromise. Usually this is when I go to the pub for my weekly smoke or if I go out with my buddy every other week.
Takes fuckloads of self discipline to not buy any at the corner shop tho. Nothing I'd like better than to bring home a bottle of whiskey or rum and drink until I fall asleep.

If you read back through, a few FGers have done the same and 6 weeks min before improvements were noticed. Well done, keep it up.

I still drink but for the past year and a half it's gone from heavy drinking every day to a few drinks at the weekend. I've taken up weed instead (vape/edibles) which helps gets me through the days and to be honest is much more enjoyable than my boozing. Lost a stone in weight but was expecting more to be honest. Apart for that not much else has changed in my life (for the better). Sometimes think, screw it, get back on the sauce but holding strong for now.
Edit - forgot to say, I think I'm glad I've basically given up, I do feel better overall, and really don't want to go back to it

Trying to cut back myself. I went through half a bottle of rum one night a couple of weeks back and felt broadly fine the next morning. Not good.
I've got four cans of Northern Monk's 0.5% for this evening and just enough ginger beer for a dark & stormy if I want one later on.
It's just an excuse but work is so fucking stressful at the moment and my anxiety is through the roof, I haven't seen the future Mrs GoatApocalypse in a while and I turn to drink when I'm stressed and lonely.

Aye, I've had fucking awful anxiety lately (talking to my doc about it next week), and as bad as it sounds drinking makes it all ok for a while.
Still managing to keep to weekends only, but the temptation to just have a couple of weeknight drinks to take the edge off is always there, even if I know it's not the right answer...

Wish I could get hold of weed vape A kind poster on here pointed me in the right direction, though it does involve bitcoin and ordering online. I've not had any issues so far with deliveries.

I am currently on holiday and am being judged harshly for drinking “3 pints” - which is actually 2 cans of Magners and one 500ml bottle of beer since 3pm today.
I actually do probably drink too much at home, but it’s hard to maintain perspective when Mrs hedben thinks anything over one single drink is excessive. It makes me want to hide my drinking from her, but that’s what people with a problem do…

I get told I’m drunk and slurry sometimes too and ask others who are like na, you seem normal :/

Wish I could get hold of weed vape You should just be able to buy a dry herb vape online. You'll still need the weed mind.

Try lifting weights when stressed and anxious. Channel that nervous energy, you'll lower your blood pressure overall which is probably good if you're recovering from alcohol overuse. Get hench at the same time and feel and see a difference in your progress.

Only thing that seems to have changed so far is my ADHD is much more noticeable to everyone around me Well done having a month off; achievement unlocked! I hit 6 months over the weekend and the question you're asking is exactly the same one I asked some time back as I was starting to think something was wrong with me and it started to get very frustrating. What I've learned is that there's no clear path of progression or time to "fix", it took me at least 3-4 months to start feeling a bit better with sleep, energy levels and pains but it's still up and down even now. Last week for example I felt like shit for no reason but I felt fine yesterday & I'm shattered again today after getting the best sleep of my life last night. There's lots of good advice in this thread and other various resources that help with staying focused on the positives. Also, I find it helps to reward yourself and have short and long term goals. Also it's worth looking into other area's of your lifestyle, for example I've been trying all sorts of things from different diets, vitamins, herbs, exercise, yoga, CBD oil, etc with various results and have yet to find the magic bullet to fix it all. Although I suspect I still need more recovery time from what I've read. Hopefully that helps you to know that it's not just you feeling shit after a month, it's normal for heavy drinkers to suffer for months or even years after but everyone is different and it just needs time and lifestyle adjustments. Good luck!

Moping up the leftovers tonight, nothing like a Pimm's with terribly flat lemonade, 4 day old (opened by accident) cocktail in a can, 5 day old rose wine, eish, cheap night though.

Fuck me nan, everyone one of those things individually could inspire some introspection. Hell, newly opened rose deserves a serious self appraisal
