Games are generally so long these days and life so stressful that sweatiness is reserved for the occasional bouts of multiplayer here. Normal difficulty all day long on anything! I see your Normal difficulty and raise you my beloved "story" diff mode. It is my mode of choice now and I am at peace with that. The only time I really deviate is to play the latest Gears campaign on Insane, not ironman though.

Veteran isn't designed to be played solo really which is why you were struggling. Was a bit about it on ACG's podcast as one bit is practically impossible solo on veteran as someone has to use a flamethrower and it does not do enough damage and the bots don't do enough to help. Wow...that's horrible game design. I'm sure there are people out there that will do it, but there are also people out there than can beat Malenia on a dance mat.

But isn't there an even harder game mode?

I started out on veteran and completed the intro. I definitely struggled on the hordes, when I was waiting for the console to be active. I switched back to normal, which is still quite challenging solo.

It doesn’t help that when you pick a difficulty it says that Veteran is how the game was designed to be played.

My son with his godlike reflexes who likes to play games like Doom on ultra-hardcore mode, started his campaign on Angel of Death difficulty. He managed the tutorial mission with only one death but I checked in on him just as I was going to bed on the second mission. He had not got very far and his health was almost always at 10%, no stim packs to pick up but somehow he managed to keep staying alive.
His computer was struggling a bit with slow-down, some out of sync audio but he's a persistent bugger. I wish I still had the reflexes for that kind of gaming.

I think it is designed for more co-op play, like it's been mentioned. There's barely any stim packs from what I can see, so you're relying on getting revived by other players/AI. Not sure if it's a major criticism, as the core game is still pretty balanced on normal.

Yeah the bit in the 3rd mission where you have to use a pyreblaster to keep away the gribblies but also try to kill the 2 floaty dudes in the air is pure bullshit.

Aah, glad I didn't get through the prologue into the main story then, as alone in prologue it was very difficult, can't imagine how much harder without co-op partners instead of AI partners.

Just a couple of nerd dissatisfactions here. These should generally be in squads of 5 - 10 with a Lieutenant (Titus) able to join. It’s literally a sergeant and one Intercessor. It’ll of course be to keep the processing down across the platforms but it has bugged me and it’s no wonder there are some tough bits 😂
Although I do like the idea of Tyranid warriors leading the hordes of gribblies, which doesn’t happen in game (it might have in the past, one of the older hands may chip in).
I do think this is one of the greatest ‘licence’ games ever. It’s a step up over that pretty good Aliens game that came out the other year and that was pretty damn good.

I see no difference to Gears though, as there were times when I was waiting for the bots to revive me and failing.

Normal is fine solo (so far) and perhaps slightly easy in co op but you can’t switch off. Every time I get cocky I realise suddenly I’m near death and try and get some desperate executions in quick.
I like how operations ties into the campaign. The first one you take on the roles of some space marines Titus gave orders to in the main campaign so you get to see what happened during their side mission that helped Titus and his team.

Yeah that’s pretty cool. I’m going to break from the main story tonight to play that operations map. Hopefully not shorter than the main mission and I’ll have time for a multiplayer go as well.

I’m playing it through once, and then will do it again and weave the operations in. It does warn that there might be spoilers, otherwise I’d have done it already.

It would be better if it wasn’t shared ammo in co op. Strangers just hoover it up. I spent a good 5 mins+ in operations with 0 bullets.

I guess another game that I'm looking forward to play when it's had a few QoL patches under its belt.

It seems pretty whole and safe to buy now. I’ve had one l crash which is pretty great considering the numbers playing it (130,000 concurrent on steam). No other bugs either so far and maybe 6-7 hours played.
PvP is okay but that kind of 3rd person class based pvp I’m not into anyway.

Gonna make like Jay and be happy to announce:
‘Completed it mate!’
Just got the Operations to get through and then will decide whether MP is worth my time. I do hope I can do them solo, suspect not.
Even if MP doesn’t do it for me, this was a damn solid old school game that’s had an Imperial shit ton of love and effort put into it. It truly was like visiting a 40K theme park.
I won’t spoil anything about the end sequence but it was fairly spectacular.
I also welcome a tight game experience that can be done in a few days like this. I actually find I get more hours out of games like that - let me complete it in a week and if I love it I’ll come back and do it again in six months. Give me some gigantic RPG with a million rules and systems to learn that demands 100 hours, and I’ll quit it in a month and never go back.
It feels like my time has been respected!

This game is absolutely my jam.
I've played a campaign mission and some operations with friends and it's just been fantabulous - jumping around like an angry flea and smacking things with a hammer as the Assault class while your mates offer covering fire is good gaming. It can be quite difficult at times, not as senseless as I feared it might be.
Also one of those rare games that justifies the current gen consoles beyond way better loading times, pretty insane how many characters can fit on screen. I think it's a real achievement getting this to run on a Series S.

I found the grappling hook quite enjoyable. Was able to come to the aid of the randoms I played my one co-op mission with so far, and save them from death by slitting.

Played about half the campaign with mates this evening.
It's thoroughly enjoyable, a mix of Gears of War, World War Z and Aliens: Fireteam Elite with a healthy lick of Warhammer paint.
Which is to say, totally up my street.

Assumed he was one of the other Phobos units without the helmet. Bet it doesn’t let you do the scream 😂
