Demon's Souls as well, now that I remember it. The original one at that, for some reason I like it more than the remake's and as far as I can tell I'm not alone in that opinion

Most of my favorite intros are from 90's PC games. X-Com, Magic Carpet, System Shock... just to name a few. I loved Syndicate Wars. Everything is a utopian dream until a church if the epoch virus attacks the control chips in people's heads to reveal a blade runner corporate hellscape. Then the unisols rock up with miniguns to cleanup and the music kicks in. I remember the video being a literal slideshow on my old 486 and I could only truly appreciate it when I upgraded to my cyrix 586 (no GPUs then boys) Looking back on it now and it doesnt match anywhere close to the memory I have in my head and if you never played it back in the day it'll just be blocky hideous vomit.

The Shadow of the Colossus intro is amazing. Just the majestic scenery as the eagle flies over it, with Kow Otani's superlative score.
And speaking of scores,Nobuo Uematsu's music turns Final Fantasy 6's simple intro into something that feels epic

The music maybe hasn't aged that well, but I always loved all the Thief cutscenes.
The intro isn't as good as the Garret related one though.
Intro:
Jedi knight, even with the slightly cheesy acting. Shame this clip doesn't include the flythrough of Naar Shadar that starts the game proper.
Plus Bioshock.
Loved the Jedi Knight 2 opening. Was able to quote it word for word as a kid. Half-Life 1's intro has already been mentioned, but 2's intro to City 17 was a real standout at the time. Don't think it holds up as well now, as it all feels a bit small, but at the time it was amazing. If we are talking gameplay openings, then the opening of Breath of the Wild is fantastic. The Great Plateau really sells you on what the game is.

Great thread. I'm gonna do some thinking, but be forewarned I'll be spamming the thread with Spectrum and Amiga videos before the day is out.

The original Soul Reaver for me - the mix of narration and music is sublime.

The original Soul Reaver for me - the mix of narration and music is sublime. Hell yeah. Wish whoever owns it now would sort out a remaster or three

Another intro that really only becomes amazing because of the music

I went with FMVs, but for real time intros, nothing beats the MGS1 and Shenmue intros that were listed on the first page.

The Grim Fandango intro is class. Manny shifting from sinister to salesman mode, and that smash cut to the Excelsior Line.

I've got another one, it's a fair bit more recent but...
RIP Koichi Sugiyama, your music will (hopefully) live on for a long time yet

Bit of a stretch calling it an intro but I adored the opening chapters of Mafia 2.

As mentioned I'll say all the BioShock's, especially 1 and infinite.
Half life.
Resident evil 1.
Unreal the game, I think 1998. .
The last of us.
Prey.

I dunno if they count as 'intros', but the opening sections of Portal 1 and Portal 2 are great.

Oh, thought of another one. The intro TV show for Interstate '76 was awesome. I love how they kept it all in-character for a show.

Is the Red Alert into as a whole good? Or can you basically play Hell March over the top of anything and it comes out epic? A slide show of my cat having naps in weird places for instance.

I used to love intros back in the Amiga days where you'd have a whole disk dedicated just to the intro. For some reason the one that sprung to mind was a platform game called Premiere, that I really loved but which is probably quite obscure now. It has some terrific early-90s pixel animation. And digitised speech!
But I agree that the truly correct answer is Another World.

It looks like trash now but a lot of Squaresofts CGI always used to impress me. Would love a remake of Parasite Eve, though I'm sure they'd only mess it up.

I thought the Red Alert intro was the one with Einstein going back in time?

I thought the Red Alert intro was the one with Einstein going back in time? Not certain, but this video shows that playing when you start the campaign (from the Remastered version). Also has that montage right after though, so maybe it plays those both on boot up as well, but the shared vid only had the montage. youtu.be/zKMM_65SEvg?si=5z6B4yCNYIuY25Pb
