I'm thinking of a 2D PC platformer from around the early to mid 90s, with a futuristic aesthetic. I remember playing the demo of it, which I think may have been on a disk that came with a magazine such as PC Zone. It featured a character who in my memory looks a bit like the cyborg ninja from Metal Gear Solid. What I remember most vividly is the background art of the demo level, which depicted a super atmospheric cyberpunk city skyline enshrouded in grey smog.
Ring any bells?

Do we need to reinstate the "the loaf of bread as a health bar" search?

Abuse was my first thought as well. I think it came with a level editor as well which seemed pretty novel at the time

Abuse is actually an interesting game, because it was made by an id software spin off, has Robert Prince on sound and the mac port was released by Bungie. Also the code entered the public domain a few years after release, which made a Linux port possible.

It's the one that lets you aim your gun by moving the crosshair with the mouse, which was a bit of a novelty for a 2D game at the time, correct?

I don't recall Walker, turns out it was an Amiga game, but I moved from the Amstrad 6128 directly to my first 286 PC, so it all makes sense

There's a game I played on Xbox Live Indie Games on x360 that seems to have totally disappeared from the internet. I've tried searching for it before, but couldn't find anything remotely similar. It wasn't even that good, but I bought and completed it in one bored evening, because it had a really unique style.
It was presented as a kind of arcade cabinet view with a curved CRT-style screen at the top, that showed low-res monochrome green graphics, sort of like original gameboy but even more basic. The bottom half of the screen didn't do anything, it was just a stand-in for the controls you were using to play the top half. Or it might have even been a 4-directional d-pad that you highlighted with the controller and pressed to move. The overall view might have been letterboxed to 4:3.
The plot and gameplay was some kind of Eldritch setting, possibly Cthulhu or possibly just that kind of vibe. You'd move between rooms in a tile-based map solving some kind of puzzle (I forget the puzzle mechanic) in each one that got progressively harder.
Like I say, it wasn't even that good, and if I find it now I'll just go "huh, guess I didn't dream it" and move on with my life. Nevertheless - does it sound familiar to anyone?

There's also a semi-unknown spiritual successor called Genocide, which seems to use a similar menu as Quake. Full circle or something.

According to Bing AI chat...
"Based on your description, I think the game you’re looking for might be The Strange and Unusual: The Cthulhu Casebook. It was a puzzle game that used a retro green monochrome style and a curved CRT screen effect to create a horror atmosphere. The game involved exploring a mansion and solving various puzzles related to the Cthulhu mythos. The game was developed by The Strange and Unusual and released in 2010.
I hope this helps you find the game you’re looking for. If you have any other questions about Xbox Live Indie Games or anything else, feel free to ask me 😊."
I have no idea if that's accurate or not. Does it ring any bells?

Does it ring any bells? Thanks for trying - the name doesn’t sound familiar I’m afraid, nor does it return anything on Google (maybe I should try Bing??). The Cthulhu Casebook is either an old set of RPG scenarios, or a Sherlock Holmes story. Couldn’t find where it got Strange and Unusual from, it’s a podcast or several curiosity shops but no connection to videogames that I could find.
