That's because 80's pop is the awesome. Anyway, albums. Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime I credit this as being the album that got me into metal and rescued me from a life of MC Hammer and shell suits. I will be forever grateful to them. Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes Saw her playing Crucify on Top of the Pops and was absolutely blown away. Have an extensive collection of her early stuff, got the fanzine etc. I don't think I've done that for any other artist. Honorable mentions for: Cradle of Filth - Vempire Within Temptation - The Silent Force Roxette - Look Sharp! I’ve discovered an appreciation for 80s pop, I hated synth when I was kid which didn’t help. I liked raw guitar band music back then with a Hammond at most. However when you look back at all those 80s pop bands now the musicianship was often incredible. Bass guitar in particular. I find myself relating to this too with Human League even being in my rotation these days. |

I’ve also realised that a lot of the 80s synth pop bands I thought were awful at the time are actually amazing. Pet Shop Boys probably being the most extreme example but also Yazoo, Depeche Mode, Ultravox, Bronski Beat etc.

Ive always really dug the pet shop boys but only just in the last few years is that something people dont sneer at. Left to my own devices is genuinely one of my favourite songs.
But, on a similar note, I always lumped Japan in with the slightly lame New Romantics but I picked up a cheap copy of Quiet Life a few months ago and they are actually pretty righteous. Its a brilliant album that pretty much everyone else copied and watered down.

'Jungle Hits: Vol. 2'. I got it when I got my decks and learned to mix with it. By the time I finished, I could get a tight hour set out of it without even having to plug my headphones in. Genuinely the best compilation album I can think of. Every single track is an absolute, solid gold banger. Similar, but it was Drum and Bass Selection 1. I already had a few breakbeat/hardcore records by the time I got my decks, but this was the first Jungle/DnB record I had and I was hooked. I listen to a fairly wide range thees days, but from the mid 90's to 00's I hardly listened to (and didn't buy) anything with a guitar in it. Saying that, there are some landmark albums which blew me away at the time, and I still listen too today Pixies - Doolittle. A perfect album and opened up my listening massively - the gateway to most of what I listen too today. Ministry - In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up. Live album of Ministry's best tracks from their early albums (not including their 1st, which is a completely different style synth album - though very good in it's own right). Never heard anything so visceral at the time. The Smiths - Hatful of Hollow. I had never been into The Smiths before they broke up, but a friend eventually wore me down and when I properly listened to it it was hooked and never looked back. Moz may be a massive dick these days, but that music is still hard to top. Recently saw The Smyths (tribute band, been going 20+ years) and it was euphoric. |

The previous album, In Casino Out, is also amazing. If like AtDI try Drive Like Jehu, Unwound, Portaits of Past, These Arms are Snakes - all good, spiky post-hardcore.

I’m going through some of the mentions here, and enjoyed re-getting to know machine gun feedback but what is it with World of Twist?
It’s been recommended a few times to me and on listening again I just can’t see it. It’s ok, but nothing more.
Japan is next on my list. Well Damned Damned Damned is as I’ve gone down that rabbit hole, but when I emerge…

I still remember a girl I liked asking me what I got for my birthday, it would have been around 1990, and I replied that I got the latest Pet Shop Boys album. She actually looked disgusted and never spoke to me again I think people just thought you were gay if you liked them back then… …not that there’s anything wrong with that  |
