He’s a dick. He’d be dead twenty times over if he didn’t heal! Edit: and now he is. So long. You big fanny.

I am upto some bint with a pack of dags. Pity it wasn't a pack of daz. The place could do with some freshening up, it's a real hell hole. Just up to the first boss and going to call it a night. Sharing the game on steam with my son which is a real pita these days.

I did. Just takes me back there? Not sure the point. Good fight though and got a ring.
Just killed another boss on a bridge and now I’m fannying about past an umbral area off said bridge.
I’m hesitant to say it but so far it’s going all the way to being right behind the dark souls trilogy in my internal list of soulsy jobs. Only those three then bloodborne above it. I’m finding myself constantly impressed and there’s very little I don’t like. If anything.

They’ve even nailed that whole “I can see back to where I fought him and that’s that area and you can see there from here and oh shit I bet I have to go there at some point” vibe.

Yeah I don't get it, it has some problems but if you like soulslikes it's fantastic.

It has overtaken Nioh 2? High praise indeed!

I mean. Look. I'm aware that saying that is inherently ridiculous. It's doubtful that's it's (LotF) the better game per se, but in all honesty so far I'm liking it more.

My favourite games are often not the "best" games. Some just hit the spot more than the others. The world of LotF is doing a lot of the heavy lifting. It's fucking epic and so beautifully grim. The combat has weight and heft, it's responsive, the boss fights have been brilliant so far and the level design top notch. The ambient sound works in tandem with the visuals with crying, screaming, weird noises, and just general creepiness. It's like someone looked at a little thirteen year old me sitting at my desk (and, instead of doing my homework) drawing Warhammer plaguebearers walking through swamps filled with corpses and went "ah, I think we have the game for you young man".
That and it genuinely feels like Dark Souls 4. The Umbral stuff is just the icing on the cake. More than once I've shat myself when looking at stuff through the lamp, only to turn and see little glowing eyed bastards legging it towards me, or a reaper behind me, lowering my lamp just in time as something beside me smashes to remind me they aren't truly gone just because I can't see them, knowing that if I die or transport back they will be waiting for me.

How's it running for you? Seems like one of those games that absolutely requires FSR in order to run well on mainstream cards. I have a feeling that will become the standard for UE5 games.

God I’m shit at this, can get Pieta down to her last quarter health and that’s it. Tried the summon but they’re garbage and get in the way. I chose the Blackfeather Ranger class that runs out of ammo and unless I’ve missed something I can’t get anymore.
I’ve also had severe stuttering in the boss fight that doesn’t help.

You can replenish ammo using an ammo pouch, although you don't get it back if you die.
With the exception of a few special moves, you basically can't die if you're blocking. As long as you don't run out of stamina you can block all of her attacks, and if you're lucky you can get a parry in.

Finished off Piata last night. Not too many attempts needed, I think 5 in total. I went with Orian Preacher as I do like a magic build. Very good for picking things off at range and the hammer is meaty if a bit slow. Would like to get stuck in more but the bloody kid hasn't given up on it yet.
Seems to be running ok on my Ryzen 5600 and Geforce 3060 but get the odd stuttering when going into a new area. Could do with some more optimisation and there are few bugs but nothing to breaking yet. Also says I should have it installed on a SSD, which it is. Odd.

Joining the club and ordered from Game Collection. I’ll ignore the reviews as it’s exactly the kind of game I really like for these long nights.

Calrath doesn't fuck about. Managing to inch my way through but there's some nasty shit here. Keep forgetting about that soul-yanky-lamp move where you can get a load of wither damage on harder mobs. Worth it for some of these bastards. Also finding my poison arrows a god send so long as I keep my ammo pouches topped up.
Apparently I'm at 18 hours already. Which is a bit scary.

Are the bosses hard? And you know what I mean when I say that - This is me we're talking about here.
Do you go back to spawn point on death and have to go get your stuff too?
Though that shouldn't be too much difficulty as I'm currently playing everquest and that's got the harshest death penalty going.

Though that shouldn't be too much difficulty as I'm currently playing everquest and that's got the harshest death penalty going. It's basically Dark Souls with Soul reaver twin world mechanics (with a sprinkling of Mortal Shell actually). There's vestiges that are basically bonfires. But you can also make your own temporary ones at numerous points. Boss fights are tough but fair. I've died a fair few times but they are always surmountable.
Re: The twin world and death - You can travel to the Umbral world at any time using your lamp. In order to get back into the living world, you have to find these little totem things that are scattered around. If you die in the umbral world, you die (respawn at vestige time). If you die in the real worl though, you appear in the umbral world. Essentially giving you another shot at killing what you are fighting and then finding a totem thing to respawn into the real world. The umbral world is also... different, in a lot of ways. Different paths appear, or openings that weren't there before. This second chance idea reminds me of Mortal Shell in the way that when you get knocked out your shell, you get another shot at getting back into it and staying alive.
It's difficult, but not too difficult. Things can get quite heated at points, particulalry when you end up in Umbral and have to fight Umbral enemies as well as the main enemies and there's shit flying in every direction. But the combat is very responsive and hefty, with i-frames for dodging very forgiving.
There is, however, lots of opportunities to fall to your death.
I’m also hopelessly addicted to it. Embarrassingly so.

Thanks for the write up. That umbral stuff sounds different.
Though I'm squinting my eyes at the description of bosses.
And, er, I'd forgotten about the cliffs.
You got it on ps5?

That's because there's nothing much to say in all honesty. For more detail though: Boss fights aren't anything harder than the rest of the game tbh. If you can get TO the boss, you have a fair chance of beating it. The first proper boss, Pieta, is a bit of a skill check, but apart from that I haven't found anything too difficult. I'm shit at bosses, and I die a lot, but you can get past them as - like I say - their movesets are clear, telegraphed, and just require learning and not fucking up. Pieta is also the worse because, until they roll out a patch or two, the frame rate seems to dip a bit in that fight. Not massively. We're not talking Quelaag on PS3 Dark Souls 1 here, but enough so you notice it, which may put you off. The long and short of it is that it's a souls-like, and it's probably placed right in the middle in terms of difficulty. It all depends on your tolerance for bosses these days. You may have had your fill, in which case this will probably only frustrate you.
The areas themselves are filled with mobs, even moreso in the Umbral world, and that might also frustrate you as well. It can feel a bit overwhelming at times but I'm actually loving that part of it.
Yeah on PS5. I haven't tried the summoning part yet so I don't know how well it works, but it looks like you can summon for bosses etc if you need to.
