Couldn't get on with the first game, loved the second.
Exploring on the back of your own steam and finding monsters, discoveries and the like was really satisfying.

30/60 aside, I actually think the first game still looks better than the second. It's grimier, and I love the narrow DoF effects and all the flare and shit.

So the last chapter is quite an odd place to jump back into the first game but I ploughed through it last night just to unlock NG+. Forgot how much fun it is. Big arena fight followed by a twin boss fight then a weird stealth section and finishing with an over the top boss fight on top of a giant brain. Game is fucking nuts.
So I'm going to start the Kidman DLC and see what that's like then jump into NG+.

I'm still quite shocked you hated the second one Wunty. Thought it would be right up your alley.

Not as shocked as me, it should have been a no brainer! It started off quite good with the creepy knife ladies and the ghost woman. Just the horrendous pop-up to take the shine off. It just ended up getting utter jobby once the fire enemies appeared as they looked utter shit and weren't creepy in the least. I also didn't like how much more coherent it was. It took a lot of the mystery away. I loved the fact the first would just lurch from one bonkers moment to the next. But, as I say, I've reinstalled it so fuck it. I'm going in on NG+ after ripping through the first.
I say that. I have 7 million games installed and I have a feeling that either one will get no more than an hour before I fuck them off.

Evil Within 2 is a brilliant game. I never really got on with the 1st one but I loved the 2nd one.
I mean if you like the 3rd person Resi games then you are going to like EW2 surely.
Would love to have a 3rd game in the series.

I think I fall into the camp of liking them both, but much prefer the second. I don't remember a lot about the first, but the second was a day one purchase, so it must have left some kind of good impression. Will have to revisit at some stage.
I'd say the second's addition of a slightly tactical slant was welcome for a lot of people. Like that spider lady who looked a bit like Bruce Dickerson; you could go and tool up and choose to engage her on your own terms at a time of your choosing.

Someone else posted it but as I get older I just love the 'semi open world' structure in games and EW2 was a good example of it.
Big enough that I don't feel restricted and can take multiple approaches to areas/problems but small enough that I can explore the whole area without it feeling like a chore.

Yeah I was concerned initially about the "hub" areas, but once I played the game all the concerns were gone.

In all fairness, the hub idea was something I did like.
I'll give it another whirl. But it's too clean looking dammit.

My current list of unfinished games is eye watering. My list of unstarted games is just as long. Yet still I keep buying them.
Why? I have no idea. Blame the sales and my own failing grasp on reality.
