Welcome, future slaves of duck kind, to the 2023 Play What You Get, Get What You Play challenge, often affectionately referred to as PIGWHIP!
FOR NEWBIES: THE ELEVATOR PITCH!
Spending too much cash on games you never play? Dipping into games for a few hours and then abandoning them? What you need is a bit of a social covenant to get that shit back in order!
Go hardcore and only play ten games for the whole year. That'll force you to make better choices and actually play what you get.
π THE TEN GAME CHALLENGE
The pinnacle of pigwhipping.
Any game you owned before the 20th of January 2023 is available for you to play as much as you like. From that date forward you can only obtain ten new games. I say "obtain" and not "buy" because I don't care if you bought it, found it, fucked it, pre-ordered it, got it from Aunty Maude on your birfday, borrowed it from the Pope, or coded it yourself. Ten. Games. New to you. Only. Or else.
We don't care if you finish them, only that they number ten or fewer.
WHO IS PLAYING?
All participants from last year have been re-entered this year. The only people not in the ten game challenge last year either played fuck all or had no trouble toeing the line. I hereby declare them CURED! They are welcome to stay for the ten game challenge, as so many of our fellow fuckups majestically succeeded at last year.
New peeps can petition to join throughout the year.
Yep, it's go hard or go home in 2023. Ten games. Make it happen!

So far so good for me. I might even go through January without buying a game. Been playing Xenoblade Chronicles 3 which I started in December last year. Also restarted Horizon FW which I brought last year and due to Elden Ring and others I never got into it and it went into the pile of shame. Release calendar looks stacked this year though

Oh well, why not? I'm in! Currently playing Nier:Automata which I bought last year. Been eyeing some Persona games, plus of course Zelda coming out this year. Should be doable π

I'm out, I think. Even though I've had a 50/50 record with this challenge, I've never ever properly fallen off there wagon. Usually it has been situational (bought a new VR headset, bought a new gaming laptop, etc. etc.) with little flurries of purchasing rather than the epidemic of stupid buying I'd infected myself with for the decades previous. So let's see how I do with the shackles well and truly off. So far this year I've gone back and rinsed AC Valhalla, and I'm playing a lot of Sonic Frontiers which was a Crimbo gift. I resisted all the sales, all the offers, and whatnot. With so many XBOX big-hitters this year on the Game Pass I pre-paid for pennies years ago hopefully that isn't going to hurt me. So yeah - I'm feeling good about it. The Great Reset of 2017, or whenever we first started doing this, really did the job for me I think. Never quite found the unbounded joy for gaming I was seeking - aside from a few amazing months with a handful of specific games - but then I'm a miserable almost-50 year old, so that's probably to be expected.

Glad to see the pure form of Pigwhip back, last year's rules were too much for my thicky brain.
Am I correct in thinking the official start date is the 21st? Asking for a friend that bought 2 games on the 20th.

Hmm. I might even have a chance at surviving this year. Shmups are my downfall usually and now I have started doing them in chronological order I note I have enough already in the backlog to sate me for the year. I am almost at 1992 and there is only one game released in that year still to buy, which is Arcade Archives Last Resort. Any Cave stuff would get an auto-buy (M2's upcoming DoDonPachi DaiOuJou release being the one known PS4 release) so that is an unknown quantity, but likely very low. Finally I have enough non-shmups to keep me mostly happy otherwise. Yeah. Easy win
Without a doubt.

Can you step me up to a 5 new game purchases challenge? I seem to be surfing my backlog mostly but with a large update to DSP and a D4 release on the horizon plus aiming to invest some time into Tarkov a lot of my precious gaming time might already be spoken for. I want to go back to original reason I got involved in this challenge, preventing me from picking up shit just cos it's cheap when I have no actual time to play it.

Time for some crazy mythological rotatey-scaling shmup action!

Yeah, I know what you mean. I did find it helped when I did the challenge a couple of years ago. I became a bit more selective about what I played, and Iβve been less likely to abandon games as soon as something shiny distracts me. But I havenβt felt inclined to do it again. I like buying stuff in sales too much! I am also a miserable almost 50-year-oldβ¦

I'd like to duck out(arf!) if I may. I don't play enough games for it to be much of a challenge any more.
Dare I say it, this might mean I'm cured? My game buying is much much less than before, with almost no day one1111!!! purchases any more.
Good luck to all those who sail in this thread.

Hurrah! I'm cured.
/pre-orders all the next batch of games releases...
Tbh, gamepass has had a big effect on my ordering, since quite a few I would buy go straight on there. I don't know if it is an age thing, but there are definitelyless games that seem of interest than there were, or I am now indifferent to the hype.

Actually you know what. Count me out. I already made peace with it after fucking everything for the umpteenth time last year. It's not how I enjoy games. I love grabbing something that's cheap that piques my curiosity enough to spend an hour or so playing it. I don't care. I love gaming and it's what chills me the fuck out sometimes. I'm not adding that to my list of stressors.
I only know I'll fail after a couple of months again anyway.

2 games tonight please, landlord. Metroid Prime Remastered, as that looks a bit special and I really got into Metroid Dread over Christmas, and The Sinking City Deluxe Edition on PS5, which I've been eying up for a while.
I will inevitably capitulate soon enough, but I'll give this a go for a while at least...

Bayonetta 3 - Switch. Saw it for Β£30, though I may cancel my order. There were loads of complaints about technical issues with it.

Made my first game purchase of the year. Metroid Prime: Remastered.
Not bad going, 6 weeks into the new year before I buy my first game.

Oof, gone and treated myself to:
2) Mahou DaisakusenΒ (Sorcer Striker)
After much fancying around creating a Japanese PSN account, buying credit off Playasia then trying to find the damn game on the Japanese PS Store.
So worth it though, as it is a fantastic shmup presented in the finest way possible by porting masters M2. One might say they are 'Raizing' the bar...
anyone?
I'll get my coat.

Need to add π¦ Horizon Call of the mountain to my list. Got a PSVR2 unit. Suspect I may end up going over the 10 games . Playing GR7 alongside it but thatβs an oldie. Got a lot of titles accumulated from Ps+ over the years, but suspect I will end up going over it trying out new titles. Having said that the only game I brought this year so far is Metroid Prime. Seem to have broken the random/hype led purchasing of games, and sticking to and completing the games Iβm playing, whilst ticking a few games off in the backlog in the process. Will be playing VR titles in the same way. Means the launch line up alone will last me a good while.
