Santa got my boy a Switch and Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening for Christmas. He (and I tbf) is loving it.
So far he has only played hand held but wants to connect to the TV. Problem is, I connect it all up but the tv won't detect it/the console wont connect with the tv.
We got maybe a minute of it earlier where it was on and playable but it kept cutting to a blank screen then back on. Unplayable.
So far my googling is limited to answers of 'make sure its plugged in' or 'plug the power cable in first then the HDMI' or the classic ;go through and swap out each component of the system including the TV and the switch' but this is no help.
I only have the one TV as well so can't check on another.
Any advice?

Did you try and toggle some of the hdmi settings on switch (notably hdmi-cec)?

Try doing a full reboot (not a restore) on your TV. Rather than just a simple off and on, which is usually really just sleep mode. I don’t know if it’ll help, but it’s a thing I’d have to do on mine from time to time because one specific input would glitch out and not receive any input. Restarting the TV did the trick in my case. Also, if you have another TV, try hooking it up there to make sure it isn’t a problem with your Switch.

If youve tried different ports on your tv and switched out cables, the dock might be fucked but I would definitely take it round a mates house to test before packing it up.

Does the HDMI port on the TV work on another device? Classic troubleshooting.

Cheers all. I will try the HDMI settings first of all. How do you do a full reboot of a telly fir fucksake?! It’s obnoxiously convoluted. If you’re lucky, you can just hold down the power button for about 15 seconds. If not, you’ll need to find the option hidden in the settings.

I simply unplug the damn thing. Nowadays I have a 'masterswitch' on all the home entertainment so that everything is simply, really OFF. Anyway, I think a hard reboot of the TV is a good shout. Why I thought of HDMI-CEC is this:
How Does the Switch Use HDMI-CEC?
HDMI CEC, or Consumer Electronics Control, allows modern devices connected to a TV with HDMI to talk back and forth with each other. On the Nintendo Switch, this means the following will happen:
When you put your Switch onto the dock, it will automatically change your TV's input to the Switch's display. When you turn on your Switch while it's connected to the dock, your TV will also turn on. Turning off your TV will put your Switch to sleep.

If it worked for a minute, it’s probably a dodgy hdmi cable.

Would have been my guess too. If none of the ports on the telly work, and they do with other devices, it's either the dock or settings in the telly. What TV is it?

I had a similar issue with my Switch a few years ago and I ended up having to send the dock off for repairs. The process was surprisingly quick and simple though, I think they returned it after a couple of weeks, and you can still use the console in handheld mode whilst it's away as it doesn't need the dock to charge.

RIGHT LADS
Thank you all so much for your advice and offers of hardware. I finally got a chance to try things out just now and the big news is....
IT WORKS!
The bad news is I don't know which specific thing worked, but I changed the RGB settings and I reset the telly.
So I have been playing Zelda for about 30 minutes just to make sure it is solid...and the wee man will be chuffed when he gets home so thanks again all

30 minutes isn’t enough of a test, you’ll want to get a good 2 hours under your belt to be sure

Ideally play the game through to completion and collect all of the Korok seeds before you hand it over to the kids.

I'd laugh if the parental control timer kicks in when he tries to start playing!
