Cool. So I've done the colour challenges and dabbled a bit in "jump in", which gave me some new decks. Thing is, I don't seem to be able to use those decks in many of the other events. Is there an easy way to see which events/modes a deck is valid for? And to build decks that are valid for most modes should I be focusing on the current card series (Brothers War)? I'm used to the simplicity of Duels of the Planeswalkers, so this is all a bit confusing right now. There are lots of different formats to play: magic.wizards.com/en/formats Formats define which cards are allowed, but also the rules, like max. deck size, if a sideboard can be used, etc. That said, the most common formats are standard and historic. Standard has kind of a rolling sequence of card sets that are allowed (yearly rotation), just recently there was an update that delisted a lot of card sets and there is a new one coming out every couple of weeks that is then added to standard. This keeps things fresh and players who want to play this format will have to update their decks when cards from older sets get delisted. Historic is more or less the same as standard, but all cards are allowed. I mostly play Alchemy, which is a version of standard that features some special cards that only exist digitally, not as physical cards. It's also subject to the changing card set as standard is. At the moment, the following card sets are active in standard: - Brother's War - Dominaria - Streets of New Capenna - Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty - Innistrad: Crimson Vow - Innistrad: Midnight Hunt There is also a kind of "base game" set, which is always active. I think the cards are marked with A and the year number, like A23. For progressing I suggest doing your dailies in standard or alchemy play (not ranked, although you can if you want), and collect gold and stuff from the mastery progress bar. Then from time to time play a Jump In! event (note which decks you've already used and pick new ones), so that you can get the cards from these decks. Eventually you will have a lot of gold. You can either buy card packs with this gold (best not buy packs from the newest card set, because you will get those from the mastery rewards, but buy packs that are still within standard, if you wanna play standard). Or you can save up the gold to buy draft tokens with, which is a mode in which you can win gems, the usually-paid-for-with-real-money-currency. With these gems you can then buy the mastery pass, which basically unlocks a second progress track in your season mastery meter that gives you lots of additional goodies such as card packs. There is also stuff in the shop sometimes that can only be bought with gems. Drafts are kind of advanced, because you have to make a deck by picking 1 card from a pack and then passing it along to the next player. You then receive a pack from another player that has already picked a card, and this continues many times until you have a full deck together. As you can imagine, it takes a bit of experience to be able to decide which cards to pick to form a deck that has a chance in this mode. I usually go with blue + another color, because blue usually has lots of flying creatures, which is often a deciding factor in these draft matches. Also, pick some ridiculously expensive and powerful creatures as well, because those matches tend to go on longer than standard matches, because people don't have top card synergies, so often you'll have more than 10 lands on the table before the match is over. Oh, and also play ranked matches from time to time and try to get up to at least platinum tier, which will also reward you with some card packs and gold from time to time. And check the daily deals in the shop, sometimes you can buy a small amount of gems with gold, or buy more gold with less gold. You can also get card packs for some percent off from time to time as a daily deal.
The rest is just having fun by building your own decks with cool card synergies. Maybe start with one of the basic decks that you like, or maybe with a Jump In! deck that worked well for you, and try to understand its card synergies and then search for cards with the same keywords to improve these synergies. Then when you've played a lot of matches with a deck, you notice what it's good against and weak against, and so you can try to fortify the weaknesses. Or fortify the strengths and make it a niche deck that you only pick from time to time to have fun with. The limiting factor when building decks is basically wildcards. Those let you "buy" any card directly by "spending" a wildcard of the appropriate rarity. You get those wildcards from opening lots of packs, and rare wildcards are always in short supply, because it's often the rare cards with the most interesting abilities. There's a lot in MTGA that I still haven't tried out. When a new card set is release, I mostly only play Alchemy ranked until I'm in Platinum, then I switch to Alchemy unranked and do my dailies and try to amass gold to buy draft tokens. Then once a season I play the drafts and try to get enough gems to buy the mastery pass. Rinse and repeat, and from time to time, I work on my decks or build a whole new one. I have about three decks that I win more often than I lose with. The other decks are mostly shit but have funny card interactions that I play from time to time to get some variation from my powerhouse decks. My favourite mode would actually be limited, which is what I also played most often back in the day with physical cards. But limited is very "expensive" in MTGA, so I can't play it often. So far, only once per new card set released. Also, limited events seem to be rarely available anyway.

No idea, I've only started this summer, and it already existed then.

Yeah, they didn't have Alchemy either when I stopped playing. I did hear about it but it still wasn't enough to entice me back.

OK feel like I'm getting to know this game's economy and systems now. Currently running a Red/Black blood sacrifice deck with lots of Oni-Cult Anvil, Sanguine Brushstroke and removal cards. Also, an Hourglass Coven which seems pretty OP (have had a few opponents just quit straight away as soon as I played it). The deck has a decent enough win rate that I've started playing some ranked Alchemy games and am so far 9 wins to 1 loss (still in bronze rank though).
From what I can gather, I'm now best off saving my gold for when the new card set drops right? Then playing quick drafts to collect cards/gems? I don't yet have enough gems for the mastery pass unfortunately and while I'm loving the game I'd rather not spend money on it if I don't have to.
If anyone wants a game my username is PlasticCrystal.

Haha, I often lose against brushstroke decks.
It doesn't matter when you start playing drafts to win gems, as you can always buy into the mastery pass, and you get everything up to the free level you've achieved immediately. So you can finish the free mastery track and then 1 day before the season runs out buy mastery pass and you will get everything.
Playing drafts when the new cards are freshly out can make sense, if you think you know better than everyone else which of the new cards are good. It's also luck based of course, sometimes there are only crap cards in the packs, and I struggle to even get a single win. Or you get a few good cards at the start, then you focus on these colors, and the rest of the good cards are all in other colors.

The new season focusing on poison mechanic allows for some ridiculously powerful decks. Venerated Rotpriest seems to be the card of the season.

Nanocrystal Draft token is currently 10% off in the shop. Can't afford it. Been spending all my gold on jump in decks to try to boost my collection. I'm just keeping around 1000 spare for when gems or more gold go on sale. Currently playing around with a mono red aggro deck. It has a pretty high win rate but is kinda boring to play. Traumatic Prank is very satisfying to use though. Had a fun match against someone with an all planeswalkers deck. Would like to try that myself at some point but will need a LOT more wildcards to build it.

Red haste decks are hard to beat, if you can't go first. An all planeswalker deck sounds VERY niche. I have certainly seen some plainswalker centric decks, but only planeswalkers (I assume no other summons?) sounds very unfeasible.
Actually, one way to win against red haste is if you start out with Tasha in hand or draw her in the first 4 turns. Crippling Fear also used to be good, but it's out of rotation now.
Most of my decks are kind of bad against red haste, because I enjoy "trick" decks that hit the opponent very unexpectedly, and most of those I've been able to cobble together need 5+ turns to play out.

Yeah Tasha is a nightmare to play against with my black-red deck too, which pretty much only has 1/1 creatures.
At some point I need to learn how to play blue decks. Have always avoided them. Something about not spending all my mana during my turn just feels so wrong. They have some really cool abilities though. One guy used an insane blue card combo against me, the first card milled half of my deck and the follow up hit me for damage equal to the number of cards in my graveyard! Another blue player managed to keep cycling Time Warp so I never got to take another turn.

Yeah, blue can be crazy, but it's very hit or miss in my opinion. Of course you remember mostly the strong combos that wrecked you, but I've won against many blue decks that couldn't do shit, because they didn't draw the proper cards.
But it's nice in the way that you have to think about what he thinks you're thinking about. Yomi layers.

Okay, now I'm really curious, do you happen to remember the names of those cards? I was able to find some candidates for the mill one easily enough, but nothing on such a vicious follow-up (most similar cards had restrictions like basing damage on only the number of creatures, or needing stuff in the user's graveyard rather than yours)...

I have played against various forms of such a deck before. I think one was with Lord Xander, and another with Cut Your Losses, and there was a Dreadhound in play. Also, I have seen a variant where they cast it on themselves, and they had a huge deck with lots of cards in them that did something when they were put into the graveyard.

That was my thought, yeah, especially if it was standard. Something like Cut Your Losses on themselves then Bloodsworn Knights that get pumped to 20/20 or something Re: Planeswalker-only decks, I haven't really looked into them in the current standard but with how many Planeswalkers were released in recent sets and the Proliferate focus in All Will Be One I could see at least a Planeswalker-centric one happening. My pet deck in Commander is actually a 5 colour Planeswalker-centric deck (proxies only of course, I don't have that kind of cash to throw around) originally headed by Jodah, Archmage Eternal and currently by Sisay, Weatherlight Captain. A couple utility creatures, the relevant enchantments, artifacts etc (Doubling Season and Chain Veil MVP) and just a mess of Planeswalkers spamming abilities. It's in dire need of updating, but it's still the most fun of my projects because, with the Planeswalkers' multiple effects on top of luck of the draw, even I don't know what's going to happen during a game Proxies in general are a godsend whether you're into Commander or just want to playtest some things. I don't want to know how much money I'd have to pay to buy all the cards I've printed out over the years, and they're also super useful for using the various alternate artworks for all those cards. Can't be used in sanctioned tournaments unless otherwise stated, of course, but if your playgroup is fine with them...

@junior
Curious how you use proxies with the amount of text on cards these days. Are you printing them out?
(Not played physical magic in uhh... 22 years now. We could just scratch "Recurring Nightmare/Tolarian Academy/Whatever op as fuck card" on a basic land for a proxy and everyone knew what it did)

(Not played physical magic in uhh... 22 years now) Yep, right here: mtgprint.cardtrader.com/Put them on a PDF, print them and cut them out all old-school like, then stuff them in a sleeve with a random card behind them (so you can shuffle them without needing to print on card stock). Most if not all of the alternate artworks are available, and it even lets you choose how big you want them to be and some other QoL stuff.

I know some of those words... Okay, so: Proliferate: an ability that lets you choose any number of players or permanents with counters on them, and add a counter of any type that they already have on. For Planeswalker decks, it's a way to give them loyalty counters without using their abilities. It's a mechanic heavily associated with Phyrexia, so naturally a set centering around Phyrexia has it everywhere. Jodah, Archmage Eternal and Sisay, Weatherlight Captain: Both legendary creatures (so can be your Commander) Both with a five-colour identity thanks to their abilities (colour identity defines what colour cards you can add to a Commander deck, with them at the helm anything goes) Sisay especially has a wonderful ability, since all Planeswalkers so far are legendary she can toss almost any of them on the battlefield directly from the library if you pump her up (which her other ability takes care of) Doubling Season: Planeswalkers enter the battlefield with loyalty counters. Doubling Season doubles those counters (but not the ones you put on them when using their abilities!). Chaos ensues, because ultimate abilities that would otherwise take four or five turns to reach (and are appropriately powerful) can now be used almost as soon as the Planeswalker drops. The Chain Veil/ Oath of Teferi: multiple ability activations for each of your Planeswalkers. 'Nuff said. And that's just the stuff that was around when I made the deck, who knows what else has been added by now... If there's anything else let me know

I was mostly confused by proxies and I still have no idea what a commander is, but the planeswalker stuff was more or less clear. Commander format is worth reading up on, and only worth buying into if you have INFINITE MONEY. TLDR: 4-player format. You pick one card as your Commander, which is eternal so you can cast it whenever during the match. You have a deck of 100, restricted to singles only. It's a money format really, people are still using sols, bitterblossom, Urza's cycle cards, skullclamp etc. It is interesting to read about, and probably fun to play if you have a social group
