It's context really. It doesn't matter if a God gets bloodied up, as it's basically meaningless, so there's no real trauma for the viewer.

It’s also still muted comic violence. Thor loses an eye but it basically amounts to a quick swipe across the face and now his eye socket is all bruised.
It was pretty clear what the guy meant, Iron Man 1 was slightly more grounded in reality, then afterwards everything got more fantastical and separated. I don’t think we need this level of Comic Book Guy pedantry for a throwaway comment about how his kids reacted.

Me and the fam actually thought Black Widow was quite brutal because of the fact it was more grounded in reality and just seemed a bit more punchy. There was one scene in particular that had me sideways glancing at the boy to see how he was.

Coulson, Natasha, Ronin dealing with the loss of Natasha, the stuff in NWH are all less fantasy than the typical fights. There’s definitely more grounded stuff throughout that is specifically dealing with the death’s of non-heroes.

I would've thought BW was the most stupid of them all when you consider how much damage, she a human being, sustained and just walked it off. Falling off the roof, being in a severe car crash twice and smashing her head repeatedly on a desk. It was fucking stupid.

That whole film was terrible. It really was. Such a pointless film that added nothing but a way to pass the baton to keep the character of BW alive for future films. It felt really cynical and a massive afterthought.

Covid times were tough, they had to go back to shooting in living rooms with green fabric draped up and using an old copy of Windows Movie Maker they found in a drawer.

Don't recall it looking like that in the cinema.
Then again my post wasn't as to the quality of the film, but the way the violence was portrayed and the setting. My 11 year old found it hard going compared to most of the others for that reason.

One of the biggest problems I had with Black Widow, other than it being not very good, is that if they were going to do a solo movie for the character maybe do it before everyone knows she's died in an earlier movie.
Oh and Ray Winstone's comical accent.

I’m trying to think of any MCU movie I’d show a child under 10. Ant-Man?
Maybe Eternals to put them to sleep.
Cap murders scores of people in his first movie. Red Skull is probably really scary. Damien Cross’ death in Ant-Man would probably horrify a child.
Probably less sanity-destroying than any of the movies I saw as a child, though. Wrath of Khan (the headbugs) Raiders of the Lost Ark (melting guy) Poltergeist (all of it, but especially mirrorface and hungry tree) and Temple Of Doom (the crushing spiked ceiling, the heart-ripping scene)

Its funny how times change. I agree, I dont think there are many movies I would hand on heart be able to 100% recommend to show a sub-10 year old.
But all of the marvel movies combined arent as violent as some of the movies I watched when I was that age.

We all grew up on Officer Murphy being executed in a slow and deliberate manner, seeing all the skinned bodies in Predator as well as the Terminator removing his eyeball in the sink and cutting his arm skin off in the sequel. Plus we also saw Michael Douglas wear a wool sweater and baggy pleated trousers in Basic Instinct. Look how we turned out. Fine.

Ironically, when we went over to cape town to see my brother, a team of guys with dart guns called around looking for a family of wild baboons that were terrorising the neighbourhood, breaking into houses and eating all their food.
So that movie may have provided us with vital survival strategies.

I was a bit surprised that The Northman was only a 15, it's a tad stronger than any of the Thor movies that's for sure.
It's going to be a bit of a weird situation when MCU Blade turns up and it doesn't have the violence that the Snipes films had.

Yeah, I find it really weird that I was literally about six or seven when I saw American Werewolf, and the two things that stuck with me where the fact that they really did appear to be naked at one point, and the scene in the underground scaring the shit out of me. I didn't have a problem with any of the gore or anything.
Terminator 2 came out in 1991, when I would have been nine, but I'd definitely seen the first one loads, along with Aliens, RoboCop, and Predator. But now both my kids are roughly that age and there's no way in hell I'd let them see those movies.
I have a broad rationale which I call "Star Wars violence", which is basically fantasy stuff that can't be directly attributable to real-world stuff. Laser swords, blasters, magic powers, explosions; generally speaking the characters get roughed up, dirtied, cut lips, but anything genuinely nasty is given such a fantastical sheen as to appear cartoony. Loads of dismemberment in Star Wars, but nobody bleeds (apart from briefly in A New Hope).
The MCU is obviously a bit grittier, and varies wildly from movie to movie, but most of it I think is kind of at the rougher end of the Star Wars scale, rather than being like a Mission: Impossible movie or even The Dark Knight. There's technically a lot of violence in The First Avenger but it's played very, very lightly; people get shot but there's little to no blood or sense of impact, just like the Stormtroopers in Star Wars. Even the later movies there's a lot of punching and kicking but no one seems to break a bone or lose a tooth. So you're left with the general tone of a film, and I think the Ant-Man movies, First Avenger, the Spider-Mans, even really the core Avengers films, all have a generally lighter, less gritty tone to them, so I'd be happy for the kids to see them (Guardians, too, I guess, but that's a bit more adult in other ways).
I'm trying to get them to watch Indiana Jones at the moment to little succes. I briefly made some reference to a Nazi's face melting, and my eldest said, "I don't like Nazis but I still don't think I'd like to see one of their faces melt."

The Nazis deserved it, the poor sap that has his still beating heart ripped out of his chest in Temple of Doom has my sympathies though.

I'm trying to decide what the number one thing that was good about An American Werewolf in London was, it's either the practical special effects or Jenny Agutter.
