If the boy wants to watch Crystal Skull, then let him. He must be allowed to suffer. It'll add character. Kal, don't throw your toys out the pram. It's beardy men discussing films kids don't watch. If you've got metrics and data that disprove something or show what kids like, share away. Christ, it's Friday morning. To be honest I actually am curious to see what I'll make of it on a second viewing with my expectations in check. Not seen it since the cinema.

I’m imaging old man geefe’s interactions with the youth of today Saw a lad the other day in a Slipknot shirt and thought, of all the fucking retro bands you pick that one. Honestly, nu metal making a return is a travesty. Still, at least Linkin Park can't physically make a comeback. An old man barking at clouds knowing what all the "cool" kids should be liking and not liking. Review for indy or geefe's latest post.....you decide

My guess would be that kids are just better served for content, they dont have to watch what their parents are watching anymore. They have a vast library of movies available when they want them. If I look at the IMDB Top 250, ive seen most of them and a good chunk of them are from having literally no choice. No eight year old is going to choose to watch Bridge on The River Kwai these days (I would worry if they did). I got the boy to watch half of the Great Escape at Christmas. He was kind of into it, but I think the biggest change is that older films properly set the scene and allowed characters to develop. These days the action comes much quicker. But doesn't have the pay off as a result

Which half? Cause if it was just the first, I don't know if that's cruel or kind.

Maybe stop when he gets to Mexico and just imagine it all worked out fine

You just have to cover their eyes for the horrifying bits, like my parents did with the head melting when I was a kid.
Like the fridge bit. And any bit with Shia in it. And the terrible cgi jungle chase.

Also: my mind was wandering and realised most nerds on here will have watched most of the ghibli movies with their kids and some of them are nearly 40 years old now, so its not like kids wont watch old movies.

My kids at 2 and 4 loved Totoro, Ponyo, the borrower one, witch one. I wasn't really a fan myself previously.
The Japanese story style is so different to other things they've been exposed to.

I like Laputa. The girls face when she saw the iron golem off minecraft was a treat.

I really like Laputa, think it's one of their strongest films outside of Mononoke and Spirited Away Kiki's Delivery Service - that's a snorefest.

The girl loves Kikis, too. And The Cat Returns, which is usually considered a weak one.
Something for everyone, you cant knock that.

I don't mind Kiki. Ponyo was dull but it was clearly aimed at youngsters.
I haven't seen a couple of the newer ones, but from all the old classics (except Earthsea), Laputa was the main snorefest. Porco Rosso was so so.

It has some of the best imagery but controversially I didn't find Totoro that interesting.

My 2 have resisted most Ghibli for some reason. Think they've only seen Kiki, Spirited Away, Arriety and perhaps Porco? Not my genre really so haven't been as keen to push them.

I think Totoro is great in that it has monsters that are clearly monsters but are not actually scary / dangerous.

The 'My Neighbour Totoro' stage production is starting another run at the Barbican in november and I would absolutely urge anyone who is even remotely interested to go and see it.
Im not prone to gushing but it was a genuinely magical experience when we saw it last year. I honestly cant recommend it enough.

I really wanted to go (I think the second run sold out instantly), but thought 3 hours was too much for my kid.

It looks very pretty and has some great imagery, if that makes you feel any better.
I've tried watching it with several different sets of kids over the years, and I don't think any of them got beyond 30 mins before the 'i'm bored' complaints started. Never had that issue with Tottoro, Nausicca, etc..

One old film he wasn't impressed with was the original Invasion if the Body Snatchers. He did enjoy it until the abrupt non-ending, "Where's the rest of it?". He has seen the original Indy trilogy a kong, ling time ago, si may rewatch before seeing the new one (whether cinema or D+ at a later date)

Went to book tickets for the opening Friday at the Printworks IMAX. Apart from the three I got, six other seats had been sold.
I don’t think this film will do very well. Or be any good. But there you have it.
