As much as I love Terminator and Aliens, 4 maybe 5 decent movies in 40 years isn't particularly great.
Avatar was just really dull, and going by the trailers this looks the same. The US early feedback is decent, but the more critical UK ones are decidedly Meh. Think I'll give it a miss.

Aliens as well. Everything he’s done since Aliens has arguably been about pushing some new technology or obsession (eg The Abyss had the prototype liquid CGI and was very wet) with the weird exception of True Lies, which I thought was a bizarre film. The point is he doesn’t rush out movies because he is trying to develop the technology behind the scenes, and he’s also pootling about some underwater trench in his mason jar full of piss.

I've not watched Avatar, everything I've seen and heard just seems a works away from what I would like to watch. The whole concept that is the most successful film ever is quite incredible.

It's just a massive Holywood blockbuster. Big set pieces over indulgent and not particularly original. I have to say when I saw it in the cinema I was blown away. If you peel the layers away though there's not much to it.

I think they've harmed their chances a bit by taking Avatar 1 off TV and streaming to funnel people to the cinema for it. There must be a generation who haven't seen the first that could have used the hype of being able to watch it. It was on Disney + most of the year but got removed in the summer. Somebody will tell me I'm wrong now I'm sure!
I always liked it. Fern Gully X Braveheart X Aliens Colonial Marines.
Obviously Sam Worthington wasn't the most charismatic lead, is he back? I remember he did this and the quite good Terminator Salvation* that everybody hates and then I never heard of him again.
*Bale was crap in it though.

It went back onto D+ a couple of weeks ago (Sweden) after being removed for a month or so.

I'd be mildly interested in going to see it. The first one was fun enough and pretty,if forgettable. But my kids haven't seen the first one, so they' have no interest in going. *shrug*

I had a dodgy HD copy when it was first released that failed after 40 mins, just about when I was starting to get bored. When I was finally able to watch it properly, I started to lose interest about the same point. The hooky copy knew me so well.

I'll be amazed if this sequel makes anywhere as much money as the first movie, unless China goes crazy for it or something. I really hope ther budget wasn't a billion dollars or even anywhere close.

Seems the Avatar re-release did $75M globally, of which $50M was international. Ahead of Ambulance for reference.
Doesn't seem like it was re-released in China though, which is odd as I thought it was big there.

Not at all..but from a "summer blockbuster" stand point all those films are infinitely more interesting then what gets offered up now. Aliens/terminator/terminator 2 are regarded as some of the best Sci fi ever made. Avatar and titanic are visual spectacles albeit with flaws. And true lies had Arnold ride a harrier jump jet and a horse all in the same film.

Just watched Avatar on D+ over a couple of nights.
I think the 4K shows the joins in the seams at points but it holds up very well overall - it doesn't shame itself compared to much more modern Marvel or Star Wars films CGI wise. Except perhaps for the hyena/ant-dog things. Those looked really bad and superimposed.
It was never going to win awards for its storyline but it is I think a rather engaging film on the whole, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I actually re-evaluated Sam Worthington a bit and think some of my worse opinions about him are a combo of received wisdom and remembering him being dull in Terminator Salvation, which was a dull film altogether anyway. His performance wasn't bad at all. Soldana was good too, and I will always have a soft spot for Sigourney Weaver. The marine big cheese guy I forget his name is hilariously over the top in a good way.
I like the fact that the nature stuff appealed to the hippy in me and the Cameron colonial marine mil-porn army tech stuff appealed to the toxic 16 year old male in me. Don't think many films have ever done that. The big sick-arsed gunship in particular was really cool.
The Na'avi look really great most of the time. Am now enthused for the second one. By the looks of it the big sick-arsed gunship has been replaced by a big sick-arsed hovercraft, which is cool.
