As an attempt to lend sanity to the film review thread…
If you hates Christmas, or are going to have a horrible Christmas, we hear for you.

Hmm Christmas. Difficult one this as I love mince pies, Christmas cake, food and mulled wine but I hate how the build-up starts in November.
I hated Christmas when I worked in retail years ago worked till midnight Christmas Eve to come back in at 4am on boxing day was shit.

The actual day is fine, spending time with the family and all that. But there's no day enjoyable enough that I'd want it stretched out over close to two months.

Work has put up all the trees. Bit early for me. I’m a December 1st kind of guy.

I've just bought some new strings of fairly lights for the house. Our present shopping is done, I've already got a turkey crown and a huge gammon joint in the deep freeze and plans are all planned. It pays to be organised.

Speaking of spending the day with family, how do people feel about being guilt tripped into spending the day with your partner’s family? Mrs Shark’s parents are very nice - if a bit Daily Mail - but I don’t want to spend four days with them and her creepy uncle in the arse end of nowhere.
I’m actually going to take some work with me so I have something to get on with while everyone is staring into space with nothing to say.

Dont then? It feels like there is a compromise in there somewhere.

That won’t fly. We exist as a unit now apparently. At least in Xmas terms.

Can't be any worse than last year, when one of the kids tested positive for Covid on Christmas Eve, screwing up our plans. Luckily I had a back-up turkey defrosted in time....but then messed up the meal by accepting an offer of help with the cooking from my wife, forgetting she hates cooking....shouldn't have bloody offered.

I mean, if you cant negotiate four days down to two or something, you may have bigger problems than Christmas, kid.

Luckily the in laws have moved near us, so we can pop in for lunch then leave. To go to a more fun second Xmas meal with my family....

I like the Christmas telly adverts, but as we are watching I'm a celebrity a day late and skip through the ad breaks, I'm missing out. Asda seems to be the worst of the ones I've seen though.

Man I really wish our families didn’t live at opposite ends of the country.
That’s the issue - the missus doesn’t want to go four hours to Carlisle and only spend a couple of days there. And I can’t leave early because I’m her ride.
The compromise, as it is, is that we did Xmas at my parents last year. But as I’m at pains to point out that’s an hour away and we stayed for two days.

Juggling spending enough time with respective families, friends, just missus and I, and even finding some me time is probably my least favourite part of Christmas.
Which I guess I should be grateful for, because I have it pretty good all things considered.

I dont know how old you are but at some point, part of growing up is starting your own christmas traditions which can include just staying at home and getting pissed if you want.

3 nights, 2 full days, job done. Arrive lateish first day, leave early after 3rd night
Then next year get them to come to you.

Living in different countries to parents an in-laws used to make Christmas a mess, one lot fly in from Australia then we all trundle to France. Kids in tow, fuck that noise. Getting a dog has been a brilliant excuse as we have nobody to look after it, if people want to come here they can but I thoroughly love the quiet, just us Christmas's.
Even then it's still a mess but it's our mess, one tradition we have seemed to have started is having curry for Christmas dinner. Takes a couple of days of prep and cooking if I am fully prepared but can't imagine the in-laws being happy with a curry in general let alone for Christmas dinner.

Boxing Day curry with the leftovers is a mainstay at my family’s house. Boxing Day is way better than Xmas, but that’s another discussion.
I think the solution - starting next year - will be to host Christmas ourselves. That way the onus is on everyone else to make their way down or stay put as they see fit. Premier Inn just down the road for any overflow and I can lay as much cable as I want in my own toilet.
Roll on Xmas 2023.

I never had kids and my sister's partner died a couple of years ago just before Christmas so I feel we have to go to my parents, meet with my sis etc. especially as the wife's only family is a brother in Greece and we don't go their anymore in December anyway.
However, this year my dad (who doesn't like Christmas and gets fed up with the cooking faff, especially as two years ago the wife and I did it, taking ages and my mother just wolfed it down whilst watching the telly, saying she couldn't move to the dining room due to a hip off a few weeks earlier, and generally being a PITA) has decided we are going to the local Indian. I'm really looking forward to it.

We thought about taking it easy this year and going out somewhere but Christ places don't half jack the prices up. Instead we're going to buy as much ready prepped stuff as possible, hopefully the end results will be ok.

I stopped turkey a few years back when the place I work at started using it heavily in the Thursday Roast menu as it is clearly the cheapest option they could get.
